Teaching in Jamaica was the most amazing experience. I loved my time there!
It is hard to describe the range of emotions that I felt while I was there. The students were all so respectful and eager to learn. Finding the words to describe the experience is harder than I thought, all I can say is that I will never be the same and I am proud to have had this experience.
I had many great experiences but one that sticks out the most is this…
At the beginning of the week during a pull out session, I shared a book of poetry with two of the girls I was working with. The girls had never seen a poetry book, they LOVED it! So my co-teacher and I had decided to teach poetry to their class. The students were totally absorbed in the lesson and really enjoyed making their own acrostic poems. It felt great, watching them be so creative and the excitement they displayed when they shared their poems was so heartwarming.
At the end of the week, the school had a goodbye celebration for us. Each of us, SPC students, other volunteers and local teachers, had an opportunity to get up and share something about our time together. It brought tears to my eyes when those students teacher stood up and shared with everyone that she was going to continue teaching poetry to the students because of our lessons.
Going on this trip was a very humbling experience. I made many new friends that will last a life time.
