Today was our first full day in Derry, Ireland. This city compared to Dublin is very diverse, yet similar. These cities are both unique, interesting, and historical in their own ways.
The first thing I noticed about Derry was it is a lot smaller than Dublin, but seemed to hold a more historical point of view. Another thing I noticed was that everyone is white or Irish. In Dublin, it was mostly populated with people throughout Europe. It was by far the most international city I had ever seen. The people I mostly met were Italian, French, German, and Brazilian. The currency is also different. Here in Derry they use pounds rather than Euros. This is odd to me that it is still like this, since they are the same country. The people are just as friendly here as they are in Dublin, although they seem to have their guard up. I was told it is because we are in Northern Ireland, and the history of this area had made the majority of them a little paranoid. A last obvious difference I have noticed would be the scenery. Dublin is all buildings and streets. It’s also extremely flat. Here in Derry there is a tremendous amount of greens everywhere. There are also mountains and hills in every direction. It is absolutely beautiful.
Today was our first day in Derry. I’m sure there is plenty more to see and learn about this beautiful city. I’m excited to see what comes next.
