It has been a life-long dream of mine to go to Australia. I was given the opportunity to visit Australia this past summer. It was all that I thought it would be, and so much more. With that said, I thought how wonderful it would be to take a group of students to experience what I can only describe as an awe-inspiring, jaw-dropping, outrageous adventure. So, I decided to do just that; even better, I added New Zealand to this study abroad program.
My world travels did not begin with Australia. In fact, I have been to Seoul, South Korea; Cozumel, Mexico; several Canadian providences; Santorini, Ios and Athens, Greece; Frankfurt, Germany; and Sicily and Bari, Italy. My husband was in the Air force when we met, so we travelled whenever possible on what they refer to in the military as “hops.” We would go to whatever Air force base had flights going to the wanted destination, and “hop” on a flight for $10.00 each (the cost of a box lunch). It was fantastic. I really gained insight about other cultures, and what adventures I still had left to discover.
Although the thought of being in a foreign country can seem intimidating, especially if the language spoken is different than your own, you would be amazed by how quickly you can learn to assimilate. When I was visiting my husband (then Fiance) in Seoul, Korea, I traveled by myself. I had to figure out how to get from the airport to the Air force base on my own. At the time, I was only 18 years old. It was intimidating, but I grew so much from that trip. My only regret in college is that I never studied abroad. If I could offer any advice to students, it would be to participate in either a short study abroad program, or to study for an entire semester in another country. There is so much to gain by immersing oneself in another culture and environment.
