Studying abroad in Salamanca, Spain for three weeks was an amazing experience and my first time traveling internationally on my own. My older sister had participated in the same study abroad program through SPC two years earlier, and hearing about her experience inspired me to follow in her footsteps. Thanks to the scholarship I received, I had the opportunity to fully immerse myself in the Spanish language and culture in a way I never could have in a classroom. Living with my host mom, Elena, and her two kids pushed me to speak Spanish every day since they didn’t speak English, which helped me become much more confident communicating. Even simple conversations, meals, and doing homework together became opportunities to practice and learn. Traveling alone also taught me a great deal about independence and responsibility. From navigating airports to adjusting to life in another country, I gained confidence in my ability to handle new situations on my own while stepping outside of my comfort zone.

Outside of class, I made great friends with the other SPC students in my program and also met new people in the city, making the experience even more memorable. Exploring Salamanca, experiencing local traditions, and navigating daily life on my own gave me a deeper appreciation for Spanish culture while continuing to strengthen my independence. I loved experiencing a different way of life and seeing how people lived day to day. This experience challenged me in the best way possible, and I came home with stronger language skills, lifelong memories, and friendships that I will always value. I am incredibly grateful for the scholarship that made this opportunity possible because it allowed me to grow both personally and academically in ways I never expected.
