“Greece is out of this World, Well Worth a Visit and I will Return one Day!”

Greece

SPC student, Antoinette Barnes, shares her experience in Greece with St. Petersburg College after receiving a study abroad scholarship:

“Traveling to Greece was lots of fun. I got to see new things, try new dishes and meet lots of great new people. Although, my favorite experience in Greece was vising Kalymnos. The reason I liked this island so much is because while I was there I was able to take part in something that not many others can, I got to scuba dive in the Aegean Sea, which is part of the Mediterranean. The water I dove into was crystal clear blue and hidden in the deep waters were multiple little caves. One cave was big enough for us to explore. The cave was full of glowing coral and sponges and some were about as big as a soccer ball!

After the caves, I re-joined the group and went exploring to some ancient ruins on the Island of Telendos. The small island of Telendos is covered in ruins: Roman, Medieval, many churches and an ancient Christian necropolis. The old Christian Church stood on the edge of a cliff overlooking the ocean with a sheer drop to the beach and surrounding the church was a beautiful background resembling a fairy tale backdrop. In order to get to the Church, we first passed through a small quaint village of about fifteen houses and a school and then we continued our climb through the rocky landscape until we got to the Church. After spending some time at the Church we returned back through the village to the harbor. As we got to the harbor the sun was setting. Sunsets in Kalymnos are a sight to see! They are amazing! The colors jump from both cloud and water as if they are part of a fantastic light show. After the sun went down, the moon came out showing a dazzling nightlife and of course everybody comes out at night…mainly for the ice cream. Kalymnos has the best ice cream, although, they call it Gelato and I think it is the best in all of Greece.

From Kalymnos we went on to Athens and visited many more fantastic Greek sites from museums to the mountain of Delphi. Although it was a packed 10 days, I made many friends and experienced so many new adventures. I would have to say Greece is definitely ‘out of this world’ , well worth a visit and I plan to go back someday.”-Antoinette Barnes, SPC Student, Greece 2018
