SPC student, Stephen Williamson, shares his experience in Greece with St. Petersburg College after receiving a study abroad scholarship:
“One day as I was walking through the SPC campus, I saw a bulletin for Greece study abroad and I reacted with excitement! I thought that I would like to travel and what better way to take a class than to take it in another country? For the most part, I expected to learn the fundamentals of the classwork by attending classes and visiting areas related to the class I was taking. However, I could not have been more wrong! The Greece Study Abroad program taught me more than I could have expected and took me places that I hadn’t even heard of. Also, I got to visit wonderful museums and archaeological sites that taught me more about the history of Western Civilization than I would have learned in a local classroom. In addition to learning the classwork, I gained firsthand experience on different Greek cultures. Seeing the sites in person gave me a much greater realization on how these ancient civilizations were able to construct and use their art and sculptures to represent themselves. Finally, I was able to see how the architecture, sculptures and art changed throughout history.
This study abroad program also introduced many of the students, as well as myself, to international travel. For many of the students, international travel made a huge impact and forced individuals out of their comfort zone. For some, the thought of international travel was stressful but going through this program really helped take the pressure off and opened doors to explore more international travel options.”- Stephen Williamson, SPC student, Greece 2018
