On September 4-8, the king and queen of Spain will visit St. Augustine as part of the city’s 450th anniversary commemoration. King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia are expected to visit several of St. Augustine’s historic sites. St. Augustine will celebrate its 450th anniversary on September 8, 2015.
The mission of the event is to commemorate the multiple influences the city has had on the nation, share its multicultural history, and create engaging programs for residents and visitors. This community event is free to the public and features live music, street performances, reenactments and fireworks. The king is interested in seeing similar sites that his father, King Juan Carlos did when he visited in 2001.
The visit validates St. Augustine as the oldest permanently occupied European settlement in the United States, and as one of the most important cities in the world, shaping the historic and cultural development of the United States.
