Celebrate your beloved companions on National Pet Day!

Let’s talk about the benefits.

Pets can be the best kind of medicine. Several studies show that owning a pet has many benefits. Your pet can help lower your stress levels, alleviate depression, reduce blood pressure and cholesterol. They can also improve your overall mood, help enhance your social skills, and can even decrease the risk of a stroke or heart attack. Studies have even shown when performing a stressful task, individuals felt less stressed with their furry friends by their side. So snuggle your pet every day to keep the doctor away!

Not only do your beloved pets decrease your health risks, but they also give you a sense of love and companionship. The bond created by you and your pet becomes fundamental to both your well-beings. For example, the meaning of your relationship to your dog is often so strong that they may need training to deal with your absence.

“After a bad day, your pet can bring you laughter by doing something funny to brighten up your day.” – Kayla Wiley, SPC Vet Tech student and dog and cat owner

Give your friend a treat because they have earned it.

St. Petersburg College’s Veterinary Technology A.S. and B.A.S. programs provide our students advanced training and preparation for the Vet Tech field. It is also highly accredited by the Committee on Veterinary Technician Education and Activities (CVTEA) of the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA).  Recently even Charley Belcher from Good Day Tampa Bay by Fox 13 came to see what SPC’s Vet Tech program is all about.

Many of our students enjoy the newly built facility, which includes 32,000 Sq. feet of classrooms, labs, surgery and x-ray suites. Our SPC Veterinary Technology students have the option to take classes online or on campus in our facility, which has been awarded LEED® Gold Certification by the U.S. Green Building Council.

“We work with our animals on a daily basis. One of my favorite parts of our program is called ‘Animal Advocates,’ where every semester we assign ourselves to one of our shelter animals to keep company during their stay here at Vet Tech.” – Ashlie Koonce, SPC Vet Tech student and dog and cat owner

“While in the Vet Tech program we must log hours at external shelters and clinics. If it was not for this requirement, I would have never realized how rewarding being a part of an ER clinic is.” – Kasandra Lopez, SPC Vet Tech student and livestock owner

Adoptable Vet Tech cat

Additionally, our Vet Tech program has taken on the initiative of pet adoption services. The facility has been open since 2011, and over 300 of pets have found a forever home. The program has the very impressive AAHA accreditation which is the highest standard of veterinary medical care. So, take a look at the lovable animals that are available for adoption.

“Living in a cage is not a life to live, there are so many shelter animals out there already that would make great loving companions.” – Shannon Tormey, SPC Vet Tech student and dog and cat owner

The Vet Tech featured pet of the week: Dawn

Vet Tech's featured pet of the week, DawnDawn is a 3-year-old female Pointer who is spayed and up to date on her vaccines. She is good with cats and small dogs. She is active and loves to run and play, and her favorite past time is chasing lizards and birds. She would do well for an active family or one with children 8 years and up. Find out more about adopting Dawn.
