Grant awarded to Emergency Medical Services

METIman Patient SimulatorSt. Petersburg College’s Emergency Medical Services department has been awarded a grant from the Florida Department of Health! Wayne A. North, Director for the Division of Emergency Preparedness and Community Support, notified the EMS department they would receive funding in the amount of $48,822.75. The purpose of this grant is to improve and expand EMS by purchasing a METIman pre-hospital full body wireless adult mannequin and battery pack.

METImanThis innovative simulator provides portable and realistic simulation, and is a great way for students to practice and experience real-world scenarios. Students can perfect intubation skills and perform needle decompression. With variable airway resistance, METIman offers risk-free practice of nasal and endotracheal intubation procedures and cricothyrotomy (incision made to establish an airway) as well as defibrillation and CPR. METIman has bilateral chest movement, and responds to needle thoracentesis (removal of fluid from the chest) and chest tube placement. METIman is wireless with high fidelity technology and the perfect companion for patient simulation.

Reimagine. Refresh. Revitalize. Reborn. Meet Apollo!

Wait, there’s more!  The newly released METIman has been enhanced with a refreshed look that is surprisingly realistic, has more powerful physiology, and incorporates the updated features our EMS students need. According to CAE Healthcare’s website, Apollo is the rebirth of METIman. Apollo retains all the essentials that made METIman the perfect companion for patient simulation, but goes much further to achieve an exceptional level of authenticity.

ApolloThe metamorphosis from METIman to Apollo is more than a change in external features. Apollo’s integrated CPR analysis is compliant with the American Heart Association’s 2015 guidelines with correct hand placement, depth, and rate of compressions being captured. This valuable learning tool will be a great way for EMS students to experience scenarios.
