Businesses are always looking to improve. At St. Petersburg College, you can earn a Lean Six Sigma Green Belt Certificate that gives you the skills to be a valuable part of that process in one semester.
Six Sigma is a set of business concepts first launched by Motorola in 1986 that helps businesses improve performance. Initially used in the manufacturing field, Six Sigma has also been used in companies like Amazon.com, Bank of America, Credit Suisse, Sears and the United States Army and Marine Corps.
Knowing how to use these processes can give you an advantage when it comes to jobs and salaries.
“In today’s competitive job market, Six Sigma sets you apart and lets potential employers know you will benefit their company,” said Lara Sharp, director of SPC’s Engineering, Manufacturing and Building Arts program. “You can start your new career or step up in your current career for under $1,500.”
The Green Belt is the first of two Lean/Six Sigma certificates available. SPC also offers the Six Sigma Black Belt Certificate.
According to Indeed.com, the average salary for “lean six sigma green belt” ranges from approximately $54,729 a year for Compliance Officer to $87,520 a year for Continuous Improvement Manager.
The 12-credit hour Lean Six Sigma Green Belt Certificate program can be completed in one semester and the credits also count toward SPC’s Associate in Science Degree in Engineering Technology.
The program covers methods used in Lean and Six-Sigma such as continuous flow, overall equipment effectiveness (OEE), Kaizen, process mapping, 5S, total productive maintenance (TPM), cellular manufacturing, DMAIC, self-directed work teams, push/pull systems, design for manufacturing, and value stream mapping.
“The staff at SPC are really knowledgeable,” said SPC student Sarah Warmouth. “If I’m stuck on something, they will take the time to make sure I’m doing it right and can repeat it.”
SPC offers degrees and program that can give you entry into many fields, including manufacturing. Florida ranks among the top ten states for manufacturing and is home to more than 18,200 manufacturing companies.
