Choosing Your Major in College
The decisions a student makes in college will affect the rest of their life, and choosing an area of study is a major decision. But how do you know which major is right for you?
Career
Chose something you can see yourself doing with a smile – something that would be useful in your life! Some colleges offer a class dedicated to figuring out what your passion is, and career advisors are almost always available to students. Here’s some more good news: While you are taking general education classes, take advantage of the tools the college provides just for you. Discover what you want to do. Once you decide on a career, declaring a major is simple.
Degrees
Degrees or even certificates should indicate what you are passionate about! Having constant motivation is the product of something that you are passionate about. There are plenty of questionnaires to help you find a compatible fit, and college advisors are at the ready to help, as well. They are very knowledgeable about the majors the college offers, and will work with you to figure out what you want to do.
A.A. – This degree is more concentrated on the arts, including literature, performing arts, music, or art. This choice is for students who want to keep their options open or might still be deciding on a career.
A.S. – This degree is angled towards both the sciences and math and focuses on building blocks for someone pursuing a career in healthcare or engineering
B.A. – Requires more elective credits, allowing you to explore a related field, pursue a minor, or double majoring.
B.S. – If you know exactly what kind of job you want, this degree allows you to specialize your curriculum.
At the end of the day, the decision is yours, however it is imperative that you keep in mind you are not alone. Believe in yourself, and use the tools that are made for you. You want to wake up every day and go to your dream – not a job. This is your life: don’t you want to do something you will actually enjoy?
