SPC Theater Department presents Tom Stoppard’s Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead

St. Petersburg College Theater Department will present Tom Stoppard’s absurdist existential comedy in the Arts Auditorium on the Clearwater Campus March 30–April 3. A cast of nine actors will bring to life this hilarious twist on Shakespeare’s Hamlet.

Showing events from the point of view of two minor characters from Hamlet who have no control over their destiny, this play examines fate and asks, Can we ever really know what’s going on? Are answers as important as questions? Will Rosencrantz and Guildenstern (or Guildenstern and Rosencrantz) manage to discover the source of Hamlet’s malaise as requested by the new king? Will the mysterious players who are strolling around the castle reveal the secrets they evidently know? And whose serve is it?

Kings and Queens, a play within a play within a play, pirates and players, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead challenges both performers and theater audiences with verbal and physical gymnastics, literary allusions, and a humorous romp through one of the greatest plays of the 20th Century.

SPC Theater Presents Peter and the Starcatcher

Peter and the Starcatcher

St. Petersburg College’s Theater Department presents Peter and the Starcatcher October 20-24 in the Arts Auditorium on the Clearwater Campus.

The Tony-winning play, based on the best-selling novels, upends the century-old story of how a miserable orphan boy becomes the legendary Peter Pan.

A wildly theatrical adaptation of Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson’s best-selling novels, the play was conceived for the stage by directors Roger Rees and Alex Timbers and written by Rick Elice, with music by Wayne Barker. From marauding pirates and jungle tyrants to unwilling comrades and unlikely heroes, Peter and the Starcatcher playfully explores the depths of greed and despair… and the bonds of friendship, duty and love.

A young orphan and his mates are shipped off from Victorian England to a distant island ruled by the evil King Zarboff. They know nothing of the mysterious trunk in the captain’s cabin, which contains a precious, otherworldly cargo. At sea, the boys are discovered by a precocious young girl named Molly, a Starcatcher-in-training who realizes that the trunk’s precious cargo is starstuff, a celestial substance so powerful that it must never fall into the wrong hands. When the ship is taken over by pirates – led by the fearsome Black Stache, a villain determined to claim the trunk and its treasure for his own, the journey quickly becomes a thrilling adventure.

Featuring seventeen actors portraying more than 100 unforgettable characters, Peter and the Starcatcher uses ingenious stagecraft and the limitless possibilities of imagination to bring the story to life. SPC’s production was made possible by a cast of 19 performers and a creative team of 21 students who built sets, sewed costumes, focused lights, and managed the entire show. Join us for this singular, entertaining event that is only possible through the magic of live theater.

Shows are at 7 p.m. October 20-24, with 2 p.m. matinees on Oct. 23 and 24. There is a $10 suggested donation at the door, but the show is free for SPC students, faculty and staff with ID.

Seating is limited and reservations are required.  Please visit here to reserve a seat.
