SPC Spring Grads Take Top Honors in State Music Competition

Spring 2022 SPC graduates Nicole Rodriguez-Vargas and Aaron Trill won top honors in the Florida College System Activities Association (FCSAA) Student Artist Competition. The annual Winter Symposium convenes more than 20 institutions from the Florida College System for a week of music making, fellowship, and auditions at University Schools of Music.

Nicole Rodriguez-Vargas, a flute student of Professor Barbara Prescott, won first place in Woodwinds category. Ms. Rodriguez-Vargas will walk at Tropicana Field on May 7, completing SPC’s AA-Music Transfer Plan degree. She participated in SPC’s Concert Band and successfully auditioned into SPC’s Community Wind Symphony. Next year, she will continue her studies at University of South Florida School of Music as a Music Performance Major with Francesca Arnone.

Aaron Trill, a voice student of Professor Linda Switzer, won first place in the Bass Voice category. Trill will participate in May 7 graduation earning SPC’s AA-Music Education Transfer Plan degree. Trill participated in SPC’s College Chorus, SPC’s Madrigalians, and he performed horn in SPC’s Community Wind Symphony. Next year, Trill will continue studies at SPC towards a Bachelor degree in Educational Studies and Community Leadership.

Music AA Transfer 

SPC’s Music and Music Education AA Transfer degrees (60 credits) are two-year programs that prepare students for transfer to University music programs in Performance, Music Education (Band, Chorus, Orchestra, General Music), and Music Therapy. SPC’s Music Industry Recording Arts (MIRA) AS degree (64 credits) is a two-year workforce program with technology focus. It prepares students to work as producers, audio engineers, composers/songwriters in the music industry. The core curriculum includes courses in digital audio workstations, live sound engineering, studio recording techniques, critical listening, legal issues in music, practical music business, and more.

Audio Engineering and Production (AUDIOPE) Certificate

SPC’s Audio Engineering and Production (AUDIOPE) Certificate (24 credits) is a financial aid eligible certificate that includes instruction in digital audio workstations, studio recording techniques, acoustics, live sound and professional audio production.  The stand-alone certificate prepares workforce internships and employment. The 24 credits also count towards the MIRA-AS degree.

Alejandro Arenas

Alejandro Arenas was born in Medellin, Colombia where he started his musical career playing flamenco and classical guitar. He picked up the bass while he attended the Colegio Andino/Deutsche Schule in Bogota where he performed in the Salsa and Andean Music ensembles as well as the school’s orchestra. During his high school years he performed with different independent bands with styles ranging from salsa, blues, rock and heavy metal. Upon graduating high school he moved to Gainesville, FL. There he worked as a freelance musician while being exposed to different genres such as reggae, jazz and funk.

He earned an A.A in Music Studies from Santa Fe Community College where he worked unpacking books in the morning, studying during the day and playing gigs by night. In the midst of this chaotic time in his life he developed a deep love for jazz which drove him to learn to play the upright bass. He holds a Bachelors of Music in Jazz Performance and a Master of Music from the University of South Florida. During his studies at USF he toured Italy, France and Germany with the Jazz Ensemble 1 and the Jazztet performing at different jazz festivals such as Umbria, Juan Les Pines and Düsseldorf Jazz Rally.

David Manson

Professor David Manson is a trombonist, educator, composer, community arts presenter and music technologist. A musician with diverse interests, he began his performance career with positions in the Florida West Coast Symphony Orchestra, Memphis Symphony Orchestra and extra work with the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra. He taught low brass and jazz studies at Indiana State University from 1983-89 before returning to Florida.

A versatile musician, he has been soloist and composer with New College New Music, BONK New Music Festival, Subtropics New Music Festival, Society of Composers and SEAMUS conferences. He has performed and recorded with Diego Figueiredo, Cecil Taylor, Sam Rivers, Mario Pavone, Eugene Chadbourne, John Lindberg, Davey Williams and other innovators. He toured with the Glenn Miller Orchestra and backed legendary artists including Burt Bacharach, A versatile musician, he has been soloist and composer with New College New Music, BONK New Music Festival, Subtropics New Music Festival, Society of Composers and SEAMUS conferences. He has performed and recorded with Diego Figueiredo, Cecil Taylor, Sam Rivers, Eugene Chadbourne, John Lindberg, Davey Williams and other innovators. He toured with the Glenn Miller Orchestra and backed legendary artists including Burt Bacharach, Henry Mancini, Tommy Tune, James Moody, Kevin Mahogany and others. He was trombonist and arranger for Bogus Pomp, an acclaimed Frank Zappa repertoire band with performances in Germany, the Buffalo Philharmonic and the Florida Orchestra. His 2002 recording “Fluid Motion” with jazz legend Sam Rivers, was selected by JazzTimes critic Duck Baker as his “vote for jazz record of the year.” He has produced ten recordings including “Radiant Forces”, “A Kiss for Rio”, “Fluid Motion”, “Infinita Bossa”, “Beast”, “Particle Zoo”, “Bedbugs”, “Visions” “Go!” and “Modern Music for Trombone”. Manson composes and performs with Brazilian group O Som Do Jazz and directs the Helios Jazz Orchestra, a resident ensemble at SPC.

Nathan Muehl

Nathan Muehl oversees Bands and Orchestra at St. Petersburg College and serves as Academic Chair for Humanities and Fine Arts. He is a certified presenter of Franklin-Covey content including 7 Habits of Highly Effectively People. Muehl is currently a PhD candidate in Leadership and Education at Barry University (Miami, FL)

Professor Nathan Muehl

Prior to his appointment at SPC, Prof. Muehl taught instrumental studies at Alderson-Broaddus College. His primary responsibilities included Concert Band, Woodwind Ensemble, Woodwind Studio, Music Technology and Music Education courses. Muehl has served as a high school band and choir director, and he has experience teaching string students through the Jefferson Academy in Columbus, Ohio.

Muehl studied conducting with Dr. Russel Mikkelson, Mr. Richard Blatti, Mr. Marshall Haddock, and Dr. Hilary Apfelstdat.  He has received insightful instruction and positive critiques at conducting master classes from H. Robert Reynolds, Craig Kirchhoff, Tim Reynish,  David Effron, George Stelluto, Virginia Allen, Gary Hill, Kate Tamarkin, Roderick Macdonald,  as well as several officers of the United States Air Force Bands. Muehl has participated in conducting symposiums with members of the Gewandhaus Orchestra (Leipzig), College Conservatory of Music (University of Cincinnati),  and professors and students of The Juilliard School (NY,NY).

Music AA Transfer 

SPC’s Music and Music Education AA Transfer degrees (60 credits) are two-year programs that prepare students for transfer to University music programs in Performance, Music Education (Band, Chorus, Orchestra, General Music), and Music Therapy. Students earn Music State Common Perquisite credits in music lessons, music ensembles, music/aural theory, and student recital. Students also earn all 36 general education liberal arts credits.

Music Industry Recording Arts (MIRA) AS Degree 

SPC’s Music Industry Recording Arts (MIRA) AS degree (64 credits) is a two-year workforce program with technology focus. It prepares students to work as producers, audio engineers, composers/songwriters in the music industry. The core curriculum includes courses in digital audio workstations, live sound engineering, studio recording techniques, critical listening, legal issues in music, practical music business, and more.

Audio Engineering and Production (AUDIOPE) Certificate

SPC’s Audio Engineering and Production (AUDIOPE) Certificate (24 credits) is a financial aid eligible certificate that includes instruction in digital audio workstations, studio recording techniques, acoustics, live sound and professional audio production.  The stand-alone certificate prepares workforce internships and employment. The 24 credits also count towards the MIRA-AS degree.

Campus Connections Concert this Tuesday: March 29

7:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 29 at The Palladium in Downtown St. Pete: Free admission

Campus Connections: Featuring SPC Digital Media

Each year, the SPC Wind Ensembles present a Campus Connections Concert to promote collaboration and awareness. We seek out another department, learn what they do, theme our music around that topic, and present a concert featuring music and the happenings and opportunities of the collaborating department/program. Past connections concerts highlighted SPC Astronomy, Fine Arts, the SPC STEM Center, and Veterinary Technology.

This year, we feature the SPC Digital Media Program, which prepares students for a variety of media careers including video editors, camera operators, graphic designers, animators, web designers, digital photographers, and more.

Music Selection

The concert program includes the Gavornka Fanfare of Jack Stamp, Daydream of Timothy Mahr, and Bela Bartok’s Allegro Barbaro. We will also perform several video game themed selections, including works from the games Civilization VI, Shifters, Undertale, and Shadow of the Colossus.

The concert will include a moment of healing and reflection in light of current world events as well as a tribute to SPC Professor Shawn Thomas, with Frank Ticheli’s rendition of Amazing Grace.
