SPC music students win national voice competition

Kodey Beard and Giana Gagliardotto

St. Petersburg College music transfer students, Giana Gagliardotto and Kodey Beard, are winners of the National Society of Arts and Letters (NSAL) Classical Voice Competition.

Beard, an Associate in Arts music student and tenor performer, and Gagliardotto, an Early College student and soprano performer, both won in the Florida Region semifinals and were each awarded $250.

Gagliardotto went on to win the National Region and was awarded $1,000.

This is the first time a young artist from the Clearwater/Tampa area has won at the national level in the Classical Vocal Competition. Gagliardotto will be honored at a holiday party on Dec. 9 at the Belleair Country Club. She plans to use the award money to study voice and opera in Italy next summer.

Beard and Gagliardotto plan to pursue careers in opera as they transfer to the university or music conservatory level in Fall 2018.

Music is their passion

Gagliardotto’s voice was highlighted in the Opera Workshop scenes at the 2017 Summer Vocal Institute at SPC. She sung the famous “Libiamo” from La Traviata by Verdi and Liu’s aria from Turandot by Puccini. Beard brought the house down with his performance of “Core’ngrato” by Cardillo at the Bel Canto recital on June 14 as part of the 2017 Summer Vocal Institute.

Both students are Scholarship Singers at Chapel by the Sea, Clearwater Beach, under the Dr. Marilyn Michael, Director of Music/Organist.

This Saturday, Beard will be performing at the 2017 Summer Commencement. He also performed at 2017 Spring Commencement.

SPC partners with local rock camp to provide instruments to local kids

SPC MIRA Program

The rhythm of summer activity on the St. Petersburg/Gibbs Campus was punctuated by the NoiseMakers, a local rock camp that toured St. Petersburg College’s Music Industry Recording Arts (MIRA) program last week.

Dr. Patrick Hernly, Academic Chair of the college’s MIRA program and the staff at NoiseMakers have formed a unique partnership that resulted in St. Petersburg College writing a grant from the Fender Music Foundation to supply instruments for the NoiseMakers’ nonprofit partner – Operation Co-Exist.

Learn more about SPC’s MIRA program.

NoiseMakers and Operation Co-Exist impacting the community

IMG_2049NoiseMakers is no ordinary music school.  Partnering with musicians and offering music lessons to the community, it is located on Central Avenue in St. Petersburg.  It also houses Operation Co-Exist – a nonprofit organization that strives to improve the quality of life through the healing powers of music.  They are specifically engaged in working with at-risk youth, which includes youth in the foster care system.

NoiseMakers tours MIRA and St. Petersburg/Gibbs Campus

IMG_2050Four staff and 17 students toured the MIRA facility and St. Petersburg/Gibbs Campus.  Students received a mini seminar in the recording studio by faculty member Dave Greenberg who wowed the students with a demonstration of recording software.  After the tour, the students were presented with string instruments provided by the Fender grant.  The tour culminated with a jam session in the recording studio. Students were awed by the campus and the facilities.
