{"id":4211,"date":"2018-10-09T10:01:18","date_gmt":"2018-10-09T14:01:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.spcollege.edu\/technology-educational-information\/?p=4211"},"modified":"2024-01-30T16:07:20","modified_gmt":"2024-01-30T21:07:20","slug":"refugee-camp","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.spcollege.edu\/technology-educational-information\/refugee-camp\/","title":{"rendered":"CCIT Professor Lends Talents to Refugee Camp"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>St. Petersburg College\u2019s John Just, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.spcollege.edu\/future-students\/degrees-training\/technology\">College of Computer and Information Technology<\/a>\u00a0adjunct professor, recently volunteered with the Boat Refugee Foundation, an organization that provides services to people living in the Moria refugee camp in Lesvos, Greece.<\/p>\n<p>The Lesvos camp was formed in 2016 after more than 46,000 refugees had reached the Greek Island, and, as they sought asylum, the Greek government contained the people in camps located at five different islands. Moria is the largest of the camps.<\/p>\n<p>Just, who teaches Intro to Computers at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.spcollege.edu\/\">SPC\u00a0<\/a>and is the Senior Vice President of Learning Innovation at KnowBe4, traveled to Greece to teach English, help set up a library and teach computer skills during his two-week stay at the camp. He said the conditions there were primitive.<a href=\"https:\/\/blog.spcollege.edu\/technology-educational-information\/refugee-camp\/community-of-care\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-4256\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-4256 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.spcollege.edu\/technology-educational-information\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2018\/10\/Community-of-Care-940x1024.png\" alt=\"Community of Care logo\" width=\"252\" height=\"274\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.spcollege.edu\/technology-educational-information\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2018\/10\/Community-of-Care-940x1024.png 940w, https:\/\/blog.spcollege.edu\/technology-educational-information\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2018\/10\/Community-of-Care-275x300.png 275w, https:\/\/blog.spcollege.edu\/technology-educational-information\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2018\/10\/Community-of-Care-768x837.png 768w, https:\/\/blog.spcollege.edu\/technology-educational-information\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2018\/10\/Community-of-Care.png 1085w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 252px) 100vw, 252px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt&#8217;s very overcrowded and more people are coming in every day,\u201d Just said. \u201cThere are families with children and older people, as well. People are living in small tents in between the \u2018containers\u2019 because they are full.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In addition to the English and computer classes, The Boat Refugee Foundation offers many other services to the refugees, including a medical clinic, a school, a stress relief class and mental health workshops.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are experts from various fields there helping out,\u201d Just said. They are some of the best people I have ever had the opportunity to work with.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The refugees come from Syria, Afghanistan, Eritrea and many other war-torn countries, and though they bring their own expertise, the need for education and enrichment is vital. Just noted that he met many extraordinary people at the camp, like Ousmane, an engineering student who escaped war and devastation in North Africa.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHis native language was French,\u201d Just recalled. \u201cHe volunteered in our library and was always studying: English, Greek, and anything he could get his hands on. He hopes to go back to engineering school once he gets out of the camp. Just said he would recommend the experience to any and all.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is such a fulfilling experience because you are working with great people from all over the world,\u201d Just said. \u201cThey need our help because these people have lost everything,\u201d Just said. \u201cAnd they are really appreciative of our efforts. Several people wrote me notes of &#8220;thank you&#8221; and too many people said thank you to mention. It&#8217;s really rewarding, and there is a lot to do to help with the programs besides teaching class, so it&#8217;s great experience.
