{"id":2470,"date":"2016-07-19T17:00:44","date_gmt":"2016-07-19T21:00:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.spcollege.edu\/information-technology\/?p=2470"},"modified":"2024-01-30T16:05:47","modified_gmt":"2024-01-30T21:05:47","slug":"geek-bar","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.spcollege.edu\/technology-educational-information\/geek-bar\/","title":{"rendered":"New Geek Bar gives students additional tech support"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>St. Petersburg College&#8217;s Geek Bar is a new program piloted this summer on the St. Petersburg\/Gibbs Campus where student technology interns use their skills to help students solve common computer issues.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2471\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.spcollege.edu\/information-technology\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2016\/07\/SPC-Geek-Bar.jpg\" alt=\"SPC Geek Bar\" width=\"400\" height=\"259\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.spcollege.edu\/technology-educational-information\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2016\/07\/SPC-Geek-Bar.jpg 400w, https:\/\/blog.spcollege.edu\/technology-educational-information\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2016\/07\/SPC-Geek-Bar-300x194.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>Geek Bar helps students solve computer problems<\/h3>\n<p>A collaborative effort between the College of Computer and Information Technology (CCIT) Internship Program and the St. Petersburg\/Gibbs library staff, SPC students can visit the Geek Bar for technical support like:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Software installation<\/li>\n<li>Virus removal<\/li>\n<li>Computer checkup<\/li>\n<li>Windows updates<\/li>\n<li>Microsoft Office help<\/li>\n<li>Web help<\/li>\n<li>Phone and tablet help<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Whether students are in face to face, blended or 100 percent online classes, computers are an essential tool and integral to successfully completing coursework at St. Petersburg College. While SPC currently provides <a href=\"https:\/\/www.spcollege.edu\/microsoft\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">free software<\/a> and online assistance via the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.spcollege.edu\/helpdesk\">Student Help Desk<\/a>, offering additional support is an added benefit for students.<\/p>\n<p>When the question about challenges students encounter on the campus was posed, Lynn McCormick-McDonald, Library Program Director, explained how students frequently approach the library staff with questions about uploading documents and downloading software onto their personal computers.\u00a0 Additionally, while the basic computer literacy course addresses some information \u2013 students still encounter computer viruses.<\/p>\n<p>Each semester CCIT produces high qualified talented students who intern with various employers throughout the Tampa Bay area.\u00a0 During the last year, the question was posed: &#8220;Why don\u2019t we use some of this talent at the college?&#8221;\u00a0 And so, this spring campuses began utilizing student interns to work in technical support.<\/p>\n<p>The Geek Bar was another effort to effectively use our student talent.
