{"id":1377,"date":"2011-01-20T11:16:55","date_gmt":"2011-01-20T16:16:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/spcbt.wordpress.com\/?p=93"},"modified":"2024-01-30T16:01:16","modified_gmt":"2024-01-30T21:01:16","slug":"new-courses-for-a-new-year-at-st-petersburg-college","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.spcollege.edu\/technology-educational-information\/new-courses-for-a-new-year-at-st-petersburg-college\/","title":{"rendered":"New Courses for a New Year at St. Petersburg College"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>By KIMBERLY ROSS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0<\/strong>The College of Computer &amp; Information Technology (CCIT) will offer two new courses, iPhone\/iPod App Development and CGS 1100 Computer Applications, this spring at St. Petersburg College\u2019s (SPC) EpiCenter campus in the new Mac lab.<\/p>\n<p>The idea for the applications development course came about through Professor Brad Yourth at SPC\u2019s Clearwater campus, who teaches Computer \/Web Programming &amp; Analysis A.S. courses.\u00a0 This course is an introductory course in application development for IPhone, IPod and IPad Touch.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.spcollege.edu\/information-technology\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/ios-university.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-94\" title=\"ios-university\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.spcollege.edu\/information-technology\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/ios-university.png?w=243\" width=\"243\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Students who take this course will be required to write applications for Apple devices. This is apropos since SPC is a member of Apple\u2019s iOS Developer University Program.<\/p>\n<p>In order to take this course, students must take the prerequisite CGS 2402 Programming in C++ for Business course. Whether or not this course will be taught in consecutive semesters has yet to be determined.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf the first course is oversubscribed, we will likely run it again right away. Hopefully it will become popular,\u201d said Yourth.<\/p>\n<p>Yourth hopes that if all goes well he can develop other courses for Blackberry and Android phones that will lead to a mobile devices certificate.<\/p>\n<p>This course meets twice a week, Tuesday and Thursday from 6 p.m. to 8:40 p.m. beginning the second modmester, March 14 to May 6. For additional information, contact Professor Yourth at <a href=\"mailto:yourth.brad@spcollege.edu\">yourth.brad@spcollege.edu<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Also, in the spring, Professor Therezita Ortiz,\u00a0 at SPC\u2019s Clearwater campus, will be teaching the CGS 1100 course using Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac and an open source database program from Open Office.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019d like to offer it ideally every eight weeks, or every semester ,depending on the demand,\u201d said Ortiz.<\/p>\n<p>The course will be taught in the new Mac computer lab at the EpiCenter, and although Ortiz recommends that students have access to a Mac computer and Office 2008, it is not required.<\/p>\n<p>This blended course, (taught both on the Internet and in the classroom) will be held from Jan. 10 to March 11 at the EpiCenter from 6 &#8211; 8:40 p.m.\u00a0on Tuesday evenings.<\/p>\n<p>For additional information, contact Professor Ortiz at <a href=\"mailto:Ortiz.therezita@spcollege.edu\">Ortiz.therezita@spcollege.edu<\/a>\u00a0.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u00a0By KIMBERLY ROSS \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0The College of Computer &amp; Information Technology (CCIT) will offer two new courses, iPhone\/iPod App Development and CGS 1100 Computer Applications, this spring at St. Petersburg College\u2019s (SPC) EpiCenter campus in the new Mac lab.
