Eager delegates of the General Assembly participate in a vote at the third annual Global Classrooms\/Model United Nations Conference.<\/em><\/p>\n

More than 350 Pinellas County middle school students and 30 volunteers attended the third annual Global Classrooms\/Model United Nations Conference on the Clearwater Campus on May 29. The event was hosted by SPC’s Social and Behavioral Sciences Department. The Clearwater Campus first hosted the conference in November 2012 and again in May 2014.<\/p>\n

A month before the event, seventh-grade students from across the county are assigned countries and committees ranging from the Human Rights Commission (HRC) to the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF). Throughout the month, the students work diligently to become educated on their assigned country and create position papers to represent those governments’ views during the conference.<\/p>\n

Student Partnership<\/h3>\n

Through this civic engagement partnership, SPC students who participate in the Model United Nations program<\/a> serve as leaders and facilitators while Pinellas County School middle school students hold mock Model United Nations committee negotiations.<\/p>\n

This partnership is only possible through our strong, collaborative relationship with Pinellas County Schools and the non-profit organization, Foundations for Leadership<\/a>, that plays an integral role in the organization and implementation of the conference itself. This collaboration provides a wonderful opportunity for our SPC Model UN students to provide mentoring to younger students while promoting civic learning and knowledge of diplomacy and global affairs.<\/p>\n
