St. Petersburg College (SPC) Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences and Human Services<\/a> at Downtown and Midtown formally established a research internship program with the University of South Florida (USF) Rothman Center for Pediatric Neuropsychiatry<\/a> this past spring 2017 semester.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

SPC-USF Research Internship Program Coordinator Dr. Adriana Uruena-Agnes, a faculty member at the Downtown and Midtown campuses, has been working diligently in recruiting exceptional SPC students for the Rothman research assistant (RA) positions at the local research clinic. Currently, two SPC students have been accepted into the program and are working with the Rothman research staff exploring new treatment strategies for pediatric psychiatric diagnoses.<\/p>\n

The SPC-USF Rothman Research Internship Program offers SPC students the ability to learn and master critical research skills valuable to the psychology, psychiatry and other medical-related fields, while enhancing their overall academic experience through civic engagement and service in the St. Petersburg area. The SPC-USF research internship position is highly competitive yet rewarding. Consideration for the research assistant position is given to students who have successfully completed General Psychology, an upper-level psychology course (e.g. Abnormal Psychology, Developmental Psychology) and a statistics course. Students must have a minimum 3.5 GPA and the ability to dedicate 8-10 hours weekly for two semesters to the pediatric neuropsychiatry research clinic. Dr. Uruena-Agnes and USF’s Rothman research faculty will recognize and honor SPC research assistants with a letter of recommendation and acknowledgement of research efforts in associated publications. Current SPC student Jake Burklew was selected for the internship.<\/p>\n

“This internship is important to me because it will allow me to expand my knowledge within the field of psychology, provide me with quality lab experience and, most importantly, open doors to graduate school after I receive my bachelor’s degree,” Burklew said.<\/p>\n
