{"id":1251,"date":"2017-03-29T14:20:05","date_gmt":"2017-03-29T14:20:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.spcollege.edu\/social-behavioral-sciences-human-services-educational-information\/?p=1251"},"modified":"2024-02-12T08:37:43","modified_gmt":"2024-02-12T13:37:43","slug":"fifth-annual-model-united-nationsglobal-classroom-conference-coming-up","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.spcollege.edu\/social-behavioral-sciences-human-services-educational-information\/fifth-annual-model-united-nationsglobal-classroom-conference-coming-up\/","title":{"rendered":"Fifth Annual Model United Nations Conference Coming Up"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The 5th Annual SPC Model United Nations\/Pinellas County Model United Nations (PCMUN) conference will be held on Friday, April 7, 2017 at St. Petersburg College&#8217;s Clearwater Campus.<\/p>\n<p>The conference brings together Pinellas County Schools students, St. Petersburg College faculty and students, as well as the Foundation for Leadership, to teach diplomacy, negotiation and cooperation, and to model the United Nations framework. SPC Faculty and student volunteers will work with the 450 &#8211; 500 Pinellas County Schools students who participate.<\/p>\n<p>Middle and high school students, known as \u201cdelegates\u201d in the Model UN framework, will step into the shoes of United Nations member countries. The delegates will be challenged to draft resolutions, strategize, negotiate and resolve problems of today\u2019s world \u2013 all while following the UN\u2019s rules of procedure. Participating Pinellas County students have always taken great pride in researching their countries and their topics for this event, which is a culmination of all their hard work.<\/p>\n<h3>&#8230;[I]t is just fascinating to hear what one country believes in and come to a resolution at the end.<br \/>\n-Emma Tumarkin, Osceola High School Senior<\/h3>\n<p>This year, we are very excited to have confirmed Catherine Rodriguez, Diplomat in Residence for South Florida, U.S. State Department, as our keynote speaker for the event. As the Diplomat in Residence, Ms. Rodriguez engages with university and high school students on raising awareness about careers opportunities in the Foreign Service and Civil Service with the U.S. Department of State. Ms. Rodriguez will also be scheduled to meet with our St. Petersburg College students so they can have more exposure to her vast knowledge base on careers in this area.<a href=\"http:\/\/blog.spcollege.edu\/social-behavioral-sciences-human-services-educational-information\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/32\/2017\/03\/Catherine-Rodriguez.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-1305 size-full\" width=\"135\" height=\"180\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This conference is a wonderful opportunity for our St. Petersburg College students to take leadership roles by leading the Pinellas County students in their committees, and it&#8217;s also a fantastic opportunity for middle and high school students to learn about global issues, as well as develop useful life skills like public speaking,
