{"id":3007,"date":"2020-11-05T11:27:01","date_gmt":"2020-11-05T16:27:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.spcollege.edu\/public-safety-policy-legal-studies-educational-information\/?p=3007"},"modified":"2024-01-30T15:53:56","modified_gmt":"2024-01-30T20:53:56","slug":"capstone-project-becomes-a-reality-in-timbuktu","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.spcollege.edu\/public-safety-policy-legal-studies-educational-information\/capstone-project-becomes-a-reality-in-timbuktu\/","title":{"rendered":"Capstone Project Becomes a Reality in Timbuktu"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A 2016 graduate of <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.spcollege.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\">St. Petersburg College<\/a> turned his capstone project into a reality in Timbuktu, Mali. Sane Haidara, a native of Mali in West Africa, earned a bachelor&#8217;s degree in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.spcollege.edu\/future-students\/degrees-training\/public-safety-public-policy-and-legal-studies\/public-policy-and-administration\/public-policy-and-administration-bs-degree\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Public Policy and Administration<\/a> at SPC and then his master&#8217;s degree in the same field at the University of South Florida. He recently presented at SPC&#8217;s Multicultural Internal Club&#8217;s (MIC) virtual meeting, where he explained how he brought his vision to life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His capstone project at SPC was to develop a pilot program that would provide breakfast, lunch and a take-home meal to Timbuktu school children in order to evaluate the impact of proper nutrition on attendance, academic achievement and retention in the education system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During his virtual presentation to the SPC MIC, Haidara proudly told the group that he has put the knowledge gained and steps planned while at SPC into place to create a nonprofit called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adcsahel.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Association Pour Le D\u00e9veloppement Communautaire au Sahel<\/a> (ADCS). He and his colleagues created four components of ADCS:\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Education\u00a0&#8211;\u00a0Learning that many children don&#8217;t have breakfast before attending class, Haidara&#8217;s organization made a donation of powdered-milk and glucose to provide a nutritious breakfast to elementary school students. With this breakfast project, 189 children will be provided with a breakfast for six months. ADCS\u00a0hopes to gain more funds to offer more meals for students.<\/li><li>Health &#8211;\u00a0ADCS works with the community health center (CSCOM) and provides resources to meet local needs.<\/li><li>Water Distribution &#8211;\u00a0A solar-powered water distribution center provides clean water to the Sahel community to for daily needs and farming.<\/li><li>Elephant Conservation &#8211; This aspect\u00a0focuses on the protection and conservation of the Gourma elephant, an endangered African elephant species adapted to the desert climate.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.spcollege.edu\/public-safety-policy-legal-studies-educational-information\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2020\/11\/sane-2.jpg\" alt=\"Sane Haidara\" class=\"wp-image-3009\" width=\"159\" height=\"198\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.spcollege.edu\/public-safety-policy-legal-studies-educational-information\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2020\/11\/sane-2.jpg 640w, https:\/\/blog.spcollege.edu\/public-safety-policy-legal-studies-educational-information\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2020\/11\/sane-2-240x300.jpg 240w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 159px) 100vw, 159px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As Sane told SPC students at the MIC meeting the things he&#8217;s doing in Timbuktu, current Titans&#8217; wheels were turning.
