{"id":2611,"date":"2019-02-22T15:09:08","date_gmt":"2019-02-22T20:09:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.spcollege.edu\/public-safety-policy-legal-studies-educational-information\/?p=2611"},"modified":"2019-02-25T08:37:05","modified_gmt":"2019-02-25T13:37:05","slug":"dual-enrollment-program-offers-career-training","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.spcollege.edu\/public-safety-policy-legal-studies-educational-information\/dual-enrollment-program-offers-career-training\/","title":{"rendered":"Dual Enrollment Program Offers Career Training"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.spcollege.edu\/\">The St. Petersburg College<\/a>\/St. Petersburg Police Department Public Safety Education Program (formerly known as the St. Petersburg Police Cadet Program) is a high school dual enrollment program designed to allow high school students with an interest in law enforcement the opportunity to complete college-level courses in to preparation for opportunities of employment in this career field.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The program targets 11th and 12<sup>th<\/sup> grade high schoolers and allows them to take college courses at St. Petersburg College\u2019s Allstate Center after their regular school day. Students enrolled in the program will take a total of four classes during their last four semesters of high school, earning a total of 12 college credits. The credits can be applied toward a degree program at SPC, or they can be transferred to any accredited college or university that will accept the credits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Students with a 3.0 GPA are eligible to take courses; however, based on case-by-case decisions, the program can accept students with a 2.5 GPA as long as the students\u2019 GPA is trending up. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The program consists of four courses taken during the junior and senior years of high school. The classes are: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>11<\/strong><sup><strong>th<\/strong><\/sup><strong> Grade:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>CJE1202- Crime and Delinquency<\/li><li>CJE2605- Investigative Trends <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>12<\/strong><sup><strong>th<\/strong><\/sup><strong> Grade:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>CCJ2720-Introduction to Research Methods Criminal Justice<\/li><li>DSC1004-Introdudction to the NRF and NIMS&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Classes take place Monday through Thursday from 3 to 4:15 p.m., with students attending two days per week. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Opportunities for field trips and interaction with members of\nthe St. Petersburg Police and other law enforcement and public safety\nprofessionals will be offered. The program will require students to participate\nin training with the SPPD one Saturday per semester.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"663\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.spcollege.edu\/public-safety-policy-legal-studies-educational-information\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2019\/02\/Public-Safety-Education-Program-Poster-fall-2018-00000002-663x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2612\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.spcollege.edu\/public-safety-policy-legal-studies-educational-information\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2019\/02\/Public-Safety-Education-Program-Poster-fall-2018-00000002-663x1024.jpg 663w, https:\/\/blog.spcollege.edu\/public-safety-policy-legal-studies-educational-information\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2019\/02\/Public-Safety-Education-Program-Poster-fall-2018-00000002-194x300.jpg 194w, https:\/\/blog.spcollege.edu\/public-safety-policy-legal-studies-educational-information\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2019\/02\/Public-Safety-Education-Program-Poster-fall-2018-00000002-768x1187.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 663px) 100vw, 663px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Participating students who are 18 years of age have the opportunity to obtain part-time employment with the city of St. Petersburg, which could be used as a stepping stone to other opportunities and careers with the city. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The program is currently offered to South County high schools, but students from any high school in the district can apply, though students must furnish their own transportation. Participating schools are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Gibbs <\/li><li>Boca Ciega<\/li><li>Lakewood<\/li><li>St. Petersburg <\/li><li>Northeast<\/li><li>Pinellas Park <\/li><li>Dixie Hollins<\/li><li>Osceola<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Participation is growing. To date, the dual enrollment program has had students from Gibbs, Boca Ciega, Lakewood, Pinellas Park and St. Petersburg high schools. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you have questions, do hesitate to
