Iliana Yanes from the St. Petersburg\/Gibbs Campus was the\u00a0winner\u00a0and\u00a0took home prizes worth $1,000.<\/p>\n<p>Competitors in\u00a0this final round of the competition\u00a0were first- and second-place winners of preliminary\u00a0rounds held at the five participating St. Petersburg College campuses during October. Nine students\u00a0from those campuses\u00a0competed in the <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.spcollege.edu\/law-and-policy\/spc-great-debate-finals-set-nov-18\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">debate at the Seminole Campus Digitorium on Nov. 18<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Yanes, who said public speaking has been a passion since middle school,\u00a0plans to major in Environmental Science and Political Science after receiving her AA in May.<\/p>\n<p>She debated on\u00a0the topic &#8220;Should Marijuana Use Be Made Legal for Medical Purposes?&#8221; and\u00a0was assigned the negative position in the debate by random drawing. She skillfully argued against legalization, marshalling scientific studies, crime statistics and data analysis to question the wisdom of decriminalizing marijuana. She based her argument on three points: questionable processes for the\u00a0verification of a medical need in dispensing the product, unreliable levels of beneficial properties in its chemical make-up and negative societal consequences.
