{"id":1679,"date":"2017-05-03T09:36:04","date_gmt":"2017-05-03T13:36:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.spcollege.edu\/public-safety-policy-legal-studies-educational-information\/?p=1679"},"modified":"2024-01-30T15:52:32","modified_gmt":"2024-01-30T20:52:32","slug":"touch-a-truck-spotlights-careers-in-public-safety","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.spcollege.edu\/public-safety-policy-legal-studies-educational-information\/touch-a-truck-spotlights-careers-in-public-safety\/","title":{"rendered":"Touch-A-Truck Spotlights Careers in Public Safety"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The third annual Touch-A-Truck on St. Petersburg College Allstate Campus on Saturday, April 22 put the spotlight on\u00a0public safety vehicles and careers\u00a0that serve the community.<\/p>\n<p>This year\u2019s Touch-A-Truck featured tours of the Bayflite helicopter, and John Hopkins\u2019s new pediatric ambulance. Emergency Medical Technician and St. Petersburg College student Rick Washington was on hand to show guests around the ambulance, and talk about his experience at St. Petersburg College. Along with his teammate Respiratory Therapist Megan Monahan, they save lives here in Tampa Bay and around the world. Learn about the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.spcollege.edu\/degrees-training\/health-sciences-and-veterinary-technology\/emergency-medical-services\/emergency-medical-technician-applied-technology-diploma\">Emergency Medical Technician<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.spcollege.edu\/degrees-training\/health-sciences-and-veterinary-technology\/respiratory-care\">Respiratory Care<\/a> programs at St. Petersburg College.<\/p>\n<p>St. Petersburg Fire Rescue brought their Sutphen Fire Truck with a ladder that extended 100 feet in the air. Later in the day attendees had the opportunity to see the more rescue-focused Sutphen Fire Engine. These firefighters and paramedics are part of a team that protects more than a quarter of a million people, and responds to more than 40,000 emergency calls per year. Learn more about the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.spcollege.edu\/degrees-training\/public-safety-public-policy-and-legal-studies\/public-safety\/firefighting-academy\">Firefighter Academy<\/a>\u00a0at St. Petersburg College.<\/p>\n<p>Representatives of the Pinellas County Sheriff\u2019s Office brought along a variety of law enforcement vehicles, including a very old school police cruiser. The St. Petersburg Police Department mounted police patrol was on\u00a0display, and there was a K9 demonstration. The Police Athletic Marching Band put on a great performance at this year\u2019s Touch-A-Truck.<\/p>\n<p>This year also featured a drone demonstration, including an exciting drone race. Kids enjoyed creating chalk art, an inflatable play area, and knocking over cones with a little fire hose. The third annual Touch-A-Truck was a celebration of the vehicles and people who serve the community. It was also a chance to learn about careers in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.spcollege.edu\/degrees-training\/public-safety-public-policy-and-legal-studies\/public-safety\">public safety<\/a> from college
