\"Aha!<\/a>Learning is food for the brain.\u00a0 I\u2019ve often asked students to talk about their most\u00a0 memorable \u201cAha!\u201d moments, after a lot of hard work.\u00a0 What was the task?\u00a0 Why was it difficult for you?\u00a0 Then, I ask them to remember that feeling, both emotionally and physically.\u00a0 Did your heart start beating faster?\u00a0 Did you feel a huge weight lifted off your shoulders?\u00a0 Did you feel proud?<\/p>\n

For some students, it was riding a bike for the first time.\u00a0 Some students recounted getting their driver\u2019s license.\u00a0 Others felt the sense of accomplishment in athletics \u2026 making the winning basket in a nail-biting game, or hitting their first home run, or running their first 5k race.\u00a0 Some said that factoring their first polynomial was their best \u201cAha!\u201d experience.\u00a0 (Ok, I made that one up.\u00a0 But I really am waiting for a student to share their favorite factoring experience with me.)<\/p>\n

I ask them this question because it\u2019s a great feeling to have, and I wish we could all experience it more often.\u00a0 But the opportunities are actually all around us, especially with learning.\u00a0 Tackling a new topic can be scary, but when we master it, we feel we\u2019re on top of the world!\u00a0 Learn a new language.\u00a0 Cook a new dish.\u00a0 Try a new math problem.\u00a0 And, maybe factor a polynomial from time to time.<\/p>\n
