I"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Microsoft Word can easily become the bane of any student\u2019s existence, especially if that student is taking a composition class.\u00a0 Cursors that jump all over the place, words that are auto-corrected to other words that mean something completely different, and the seeming impossibility of getting hanging indentation to work in your citations are just a few of the problems that abound. \u00a0The creators of Microsoft Word didn\u2019t set out to drive you crazy, I promise.\u00a0 In fact, there are a number of lesser-known functions that will actually make your life <em>easier<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps my favorite is the \u201cFind\u201d function.\u00a0 This can be accessed from the \u201cFind\u201d button on the far right of the Home toolbar, or by holding down the Ctrl and F keys. This brings up a search box on the left that does some neat things. When you type a word into the box, it will display all matches in your document, including snippets of the text around that word for context.\u00a0 When your professor tells you that you need to write in third person, avoiding the first person\u2019s \u201cme\u201d and \u201cI\u201d and the second person\u2019s \u201cyou,\u201d this function is extremely useful for weeding out those \u201cyou\u201d and \u201cI\u201d bombs!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.spcollege.edu\/learning-resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2018\/09\/Find.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-626 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.spcollege.edu\/learning-resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2018\/09\/Find-142x300.png\" alt=\"Navigation Panel for Microsoft Word\" width=\"142\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.spcollege.edu\/learning-resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2018\/09\/Find-142x300.png 142w, https:\/\/blog.spcollege.edu\/learning-resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2018\/09\/Find.png 263w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 142px) 100vw, 142px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 What this search does is bring up a list of every time you\u2019ve used the word. The text around the word can give you context to see if using the word was appropriate. Got an \u2018I\u2019 but it\u2019s in a quote? That\u2019s fine! Got an \u2018I feel\u2019 outside of a quote? Not so fine \u2013 you probably want to change that.<\/p>\n<p>This is not the only usage of the Find function. If you\u2019re like me, you may find yourself enamored with a certain word or phrase.\u00a0 Sometimes, I lean too heavily on \u201ctherefore\u201d or \u201cfortunately\u201d in my writing.\u00a0 The \u201cfind\u201d function helps me make sure that I\u2019m not using these words too much, in startling, highlighted letters on my screen.<\/p>\n<p>Next time, Functional Word, Pt.
