St. Petersburg College hosted the first SPC Reads Book Club meeting for the Fall 2019 term on Oct. 3, 2019. The book this year is \u201cBorn a Crime: Stories from a South African Childhood\u201d<\/a> by Trevor Noah. Book Club Co-Chairs, Associate Provost Dr. Jennifer Dale and Student Life and Leadership Coordinator Anjum Perfetti, held an engaging discussion on the first few chapters of the book with SPC faculty, staff and students on SPC’s Clearwater Campus<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During this discussion, students shared their experiences attending the Trevor Noah comedy show that occurred a few weeks prior, which was an event sponsored by the SPC Library and SPC\u2019s Student Government Associations college-wide. With this support and sponsorship, 42 students and a few SPC employees enjoyed seeing Trevor Noah on his \u201cLoud & Clear Tour 2019\u201d in Orlando. Students bussed over to enjoy a night of fun and laughter, with the hopes of better connecting these students to Trevor Noah and sparking an interest in the book, if they had not already read it.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

What is SPC Reads?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Each year, SPC students, faculty and staff vote for a common reading selection that is celebrated college-wide. The book is intended to reach across many of the College\u2019s curricula and is incorporated into assignments in many courses, including as required reading selections, critical analysis projects, art projects and more. Furthermore, this common reading program across the college community promotes discourse and learning beyond the classroom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The SPC Reads selection was decided by an all-college vote from students, faculty and staff. The five finalists were chosen from a selection of 20 book titles nominated by SPC faculty. The SPC Reads Nomination Committee members voted for their top five choices based on reviews, programming options and course integration ideas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
