{"id":1288,"date":"2019-09-25T16:06:08","date_gmt":"2019-09-25T20:06:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.spcollege.edu\/learning-resources\/?p=1288"},"modified":"2024-01-30T15:47:41","modified_gmt":"2024-01-30T20:47:41","slug":"celebrating-banned-books-at-st-petersburg-college-libraries","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.spcollege.edu\/learning-resources\/celebrating-banned-books-at-st-petersburg-college-libraries\/","title":{"rendered":"Celebrating &#8220;Banned Books&#8221; at St. Petersburg College Libraries"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Banned Books Week (September 22 \u2013 28, 2019) is an annual week-long celebration of the freedom to read.&nbsp; It started in 1982 in response to a rise in the number of book challenges in schools, bookstores, and libraries.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the American Libraries Association, books are usually challenged with the best intentions\u2014to protect others, usually children, from difficult ideas and information. These challenges often label books \u201ccontroversial\u201d or \u201coffensive\u201d based on topics of religion, politics, violence, and sexuality. Prohibiting access to information and stories is a dangerous practice, one that libraries all over the world fight against. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The List of Banned Books may Surprise you&#8230;<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.spcollege.edu\/learning-resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2019\/09\/tarpon-display-1-527x1024.jpg\" alt=\"A photo of a book case displaying banned books.\" class=\"wp-image-1294\" width=\"298\" height=\"577\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Do you read banned books? Many of our most beloved classics have been banned or challenged.&nbsp; Check out the video from librarians, Heather Holtzman and Kaitlin Crockett, highlighting some of the banned books in the St. Petersburg College Libraries. You might be surprised by some of the titles: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=imOPC5DAWxQ&amp;feature=youtu.be\">https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=imOPC5DAWxQ&amp;feature=youtu.be<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Tarpon Springs Campus library has a special collection of these books. In an effort to preserve the freedom of information, SPC librarians are committed to providing students with access to books that face censorship. Books are available to be checked out for a period of 28 days with a Student or Staff ID card.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Read-A-Long &#8220;<em>George<\/em>&#8220;<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Students can participate in a Banned Books Read-A-Long and Discussion at the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"St. Pete-Gibbs Campus (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.spcollege.edu\/friends-partners\/about\/locations\/st-petersburg\/gibbs-campus?utm_source=social\" target=\"_blank\">St. Pete\/Gibbs Campus<\/a> library on Wednesday, September 25<sup>th<\/sup> at 2 p.m. They will discuss \u201c<em>George<\/em>\u201d by Alex Gino, a children\u2019s novel about a young, transgender girl, which is the #1 banned or challenged book in the past year.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.spcollege.edu\/learning-resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2019\/09\/Banned-book-resize.png\" alt=\"A flyer highlighting &quot;George&quot; by Alex Gino, a children's book featuring a transgender lead.
