{"id":9802,"date":"2015-06-26T18:05:53","date_gmt":"2015-06-26T18:05:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.spcollege.edu\/international\/?p=9802"},"modified":"2024-01-30T10:11:42","modified_gmt":"2024-01-30T15:11:42","slug":"rome-musei-vaticani","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.spcollege.edu\/international\/rome-musei-vaticani\/","title":{"rendered":"Rome: Musei Vaticani"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.spcollege.edu\/international\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2015\/07\/1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-9804\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.spcollege.edu\/international\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2015\/07\/1-210x300.jpg\" alt=\"1\" width=\"210\" height=\"300\" \/><br \/>\n<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>On Friday, we visited the Vatican Museum, the second largest museum in the world!<\/p>\n<p>While we were there, we saw legendary works such as Michael Angelo\u2019s Sistine Chapel, Raphael\u2019s School of Athens, and countless other gorgeous pieces. My favorite piece was the \u201cCelestial Globe\u201d painted by Giovanni Antonio Vanosio in 1567. The globe is a hollow, wooden sphere decorated with oil paint and set upon a brass frame.<\/p>\n<p>The surface of the globe depicts a whimsical yet accurate view of the Ptolemaic constellations visible in the Northern sky. When it was made, this globe would have been considered state of the art technology. Up until the end of the 16th century, Astronomers believed Ptolemy\u2019s observations and conclusions about the stars to be the absolute truth. Over time, new astronomers became more skilled at observing and cataloging the heavens with the help of \u00a0telescopes, forgotten knowledge in the Middle East, and Occam\u2019s Razor.<\/p>\n<p>Although it is obsolete today, I think the color, detail and accuracy of this piece is absolutely stunning. If I\u2019m ever lucky enough to visit Rome again, the Vatican Museum will definitely be the first place I\u2019ll revisit.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-9803\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.spcollege.edu\/international\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2015\/07\/2-300x205.jpg\" alt=\"2\" width=\"300\" height=\"205\" \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp; On Friday, we visited the Vatican Museum, the second largest museum in the world!
