{"id":8044,"date":"2015-05-14T22:33:40","date_gmt":"2015-05-14T22:33:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.spcollege.edu\/study-abroad\/?p=8044"},"modified":"2024-01-30T09:49:35","modified_gmt":"2024-01-30T14:49:35","slug":"messy-muddy-mangroves","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.spcollege.edu\/international\/messy-muddy-mangroves\/","title":{"rendered":"Messy, Muddy Mangroves!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.spcollege.edu\/study-abroad\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/IMG_5771.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" alt=\"IMG_5771\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.spcollege.edu\/study-abroad\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/IMG_5771-300x225.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a>This afternoon, we planted the mangroves.<\/p>\n<p>We had to wait until it was low tide which was between 2 and 6. \u00a0We went out at about 3:00 and took all the supplies to the planting area. \u00a0We did have to cross a small area of water in order to get to the mangrove planting site.<\/p>\n<p>Once we got all the mangroves and the supplies to the planting site, we had to work quickly to beat the tide and the rain. \u00a0We grouped the mangroves into threes and lined them up so that they could be easily recorded. \u00a0Holes were dug into the muddy ground, which was actually somewhat hard because of all the rocks that were embedded in the mud. \u00a0After the holes were dug deep enough, some topsoil, (more like top mud) was deposited into the bottom of the hole. \u00a0The mangroves were then planted and the hole was filled in. \u00a0The groups of mangroves were tied to a bamboo pole to help keep them in place.<\/p>\n<p>It did not take long to plant all the mangroves, and it was fun to get muddy and messy, but we were not done yet, we still had to measure and count the leaves on each mangrove planted and record it so that the growing process could be monitored. \u00a0When we were finally done, we were all caked in mud and had dirt and mud under out nails for a few days. The mangroves are a very important part of the marine ecosystem as they provide food, shelter,and a safe place for juvenile marine life.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This afternoon, we planted the mangroves.
