{"id":4730,"date":"2014-05-09T16:55:30","date_gmt":"2014-05-09T20:55:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.spcollege.edu\/study-abroad\/?p=4730"},"modified":"2024-01-29T12:55:47","modified_gmt":"2024-01-29T17:55:47","slug":"i-wish-every-day-was-turtle-day","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.spcollege.edu\/international\/i-wish-every-day-was-turtle-day\/","title":{"rendered":"I Wish EVERY Day was Turtle Day! by Cora Douglas"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Today was &#8220;turtle day&#8221;&#8230; and I wish every day was &#8220;turtle day&#8221;!<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/blog.spcollege.edu\/study-abroad\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" alt=\"Green Sea Turtle!\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.spcollege.edu\/study-abroad\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/2-300x225.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We dropped the net and it all began! 4 turtles in 5 hours &#8211; all female greens, so amazing! <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.spcollege.edu\/study-abroad\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/2.jpg\"><br \/>\n<\/a>They are such majestic, peaceful creatures, yet so strong and courageous. Poor turtles though&#8230;there are endless potholes in their graceful road and it&#8217;s all our fault. Global warming, fishing accidents, poaching&#8230;we are their biggest threat and it makes me so sad.<\/p>\n<p>But what a wonderful experience it was to be able to try and give back a little to them by collecting data and research! Some cool facts I learned: the top of the shell is called the &#8220;carapace&#8221;, the bottom side is the &#8220;plastron&#8221; and their genital area or tail is called the &#8220;cloaca&#8221;.\u00a0 Another interesting fact is the temperature of the water affects their sex determination: if the water temperature is below 82.4 degrees it will be male, above 84.5, it will be female, and the perfect range of a 50\/50 chance is 82.5-84.4.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Today was &#8220;turtle day&#8221;&#8230; and I wish every day was &#8220;turtle day&#8221;!
