{"id":1560,"date":"2012-08-02T17:44:19","date_gmt":"2012-08-02T21:44:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.spcollege.edu\/study-abroad\/?p=1560"},"modified":"2024-01-29T12:10:12","modified_gmt":"2024-01-29T17:10:12","slug":"understanding-other-cultures","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.spcollege.edu\/international\/understanding-other-cultures\/","title":{"rendered":"Understanding Other Cultures by Tait Sorenson"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Cultural Dimension Seminars<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong>Today we stayed in the hotel as Professor Fernandez conducted a morning seminar on Cultural Dimensions and an afternoon seminar on Intercultural Relations.\u00a0 Both seminars presented an extremely useful insight into how other countries conduct business and how it relates to the difference of countries society structures.<\/p>\n<p>The morning seminar focused on the research of Dr. Hofstedes and IBM.\u00a0 IBM placed Hofstedes in charge of introducing IBM into foreign markets in the 1970\u2019s.\u00a0 However, before IBM could thrive in foreign markets they wanted to better understand different countries cultural dimensions.\u00a0 Dr. Hofstedes\u2019s study spanned over a decade on broke into the five following categories; power distance, individualism, masculinity, uncertainty avoidance ad long-term orientation.\u00a0 He also assigned a ranking of all the countries on a scale of\u00a0 0-100.\u00a0 One such example is the Power Distance (PD).\u00a0 A country with a higher PD index, Guatemala 95, has centralized companies and strong hierarchies.\u00a0 A country with a low PD index, Israel 13, views managers and employees more as equals and involves many people in decision making.\u00a0 This system is highly regarded in the international business world today and provides a road map of each countries society, in which, an individual\/entity can approach a prospective business deal without disrespect and therefore a much higher chance of success.<\/p>\n<p>In the afternoon, Professor Fernandez taught us Intercultural Relations in Business.\u00a0 We watched several short videos on proper verbal and non-verbal language in international business.\u00a0 This included many do\u2019s and do not\u2019s of different countries.\u00a0 For instance, in Brazil, never give the thumbs up as it is same as flicking someone off in the USA and understand that Brazil\u2019s language is Portuguese, not Spanish.\u00a0 In another example, China, business cards are to be carefully presented and received, slowly, with both hands and then placed, vertically, on the table with the most qualified business card on the top of the table.\u00a0 Also, China values trust over contracts, which is similar to a \u201cwestern marriage.\u201d\u00a0 To the Chinese, the future is in the hands of the Gods and all contracts are subject to unseen variables.\u00a0 So it is important to respect business with a sense of the long-term and not set over a period of contract terms.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Cultural Dimension Seminars \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Today we stayed in the hotel as Professor Fernandez conducted a morning seminar on Cultural Dimensions and an afternoon seminar on Intercultural Relations.\u00a0 Both seminars presented an extremely useful insight into how other countries conduct business and how it relates to the difference of countries society structures.
