One of the first dramatically different cultural experiences we encountered in Ecuador was the process of using a public restroom. It typically affects the girls more than the guys. We made a stop on the first day at Itchimbia Park to look at the valley that is the center of Quito. After walking around and taking photos of the view we headed back to the bus. A few of us had to use the facilities first and discovered there is a fee for the toilet paper. It&#8217;s 20 cents and you receive the equivalent of four or five squares of toilet paper. Even if you have brought your own you typically won&#8217;t be allowed into a monitored restroom if you don&#8217;t pay the fee. There are public restrooms that are unmonitored but they, oftentimes, do not have toilet paper.
