{"id":10441,"date":"2015-10-16T19:40:05","date_gmt":"2015-10-16T19:40:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.spcollege.edu\/international\/?p=10441"},"modified":"2025-01-09T13:16:32","modified_gmt":"2025-01-09T18:16:32","slug":"study-abroad-ecuador-cross-cultural-comparison-mental-health","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.spcollege.edu\/international\/study-abroad-ecuador-cross-cultural-comparison-mental-health\/","title":{"rendered":"Study Abroad in Ecuador: A Cross Cultural Comparison in Mental Health"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Hi!<\/p>\n<p>My name is Sara Brzezinski.\u00a0 I am a psychology professor on the Tarpon Springs campus.\u00a0 I will be taking a group of students to Ecuador this summer to delve into a cross cultural comparison if mental health between the U.S. and Latin America.\u00a0 We will visit a mental health facility, talk with local practitioners, complete a service learning project with a local school, walk through the Amazon Rainforest with a cultural healer, and so much more!\u00a0 This is a great way for you to earn credit for Abnormal Psychology (CLP 2140), and experience a new culture in the process.\u00a0 Please note that you will need to successfully complete General Psychology (PSY 1012) first, so please plan your spring schedules wisely.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.spcollege.edu\/international\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2015\/10\/Ecuadorian_dress_Carnival_del_Pueblo_2010_London.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-10442 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.spcollege.edu\/international\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2015\/10\/Ecuadorian_dress_Carnival_del_Pueblo_2010_London-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.spcollege.edu\/international\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2015\/10\/Ecuadorian_dress_Carnival_del_Pueblo_2010_London-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.spcollege.edu\/international\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2015\/10\/Ecuadorian_dress_Carnival_del_Pueblo_2010_London.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I have had the opportunity to travel abroad personally and professionally for quite some time now.\u00a0 My first experience traveling abroad was when I was seventeen and traveled to Europe for sixteen days.\u00a0 This was a life changing opportunity for me.\u00a0 I can guarantee that you will find a study abroad experience to be life changing for you as well.\u00a0 You develop a global perspective which will influence your professional and personal lives.\u00a0 This is also a wonderful opportunity to put on a resume for employment as well as graduate school applications.\u00a0 If you have plans to enter into the field of psychology, especially the clinical or counseling subfields, having an understanding of Latin culture is becoming more and more of a requirement as the U.S. demographics continue to change.\u00a0 Experiencing the culture and the ideas surrounding mental health is experience you will never be able to gain from a textbook or lecture.\u00a0 This will improve your skills, understanding, and approaches as a future practitioner.<\/p>\n<p>This study abroad is interdisciplinary.\u00a0 Therefore, you also have the opportunity to earn a science credit, Tropical Ecology (BSC 2362).\u00a0 Dr. Jim Wallis will be taking us on a journey through various ecosystems including the cloud forest, Amazon rainforest, coastal areas, Galapagos Islands, and much more!\u00a0 The way we have designed the trip allows you to participate in both courses without missing out on any of the planned experiences.\u00a0 We will keep the group together, regardless of which course you are enrolled in.\u00a0 Therefore, this is also going to be a physically intense trip at times, so please review the itinerary before deciding to participate.\u00a0 You can find all of the information regarding the program on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.spcollege.edu\/ecuador\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">our website<\/a>.\u00a0 Be sure to check out our short video too!<\/p>\n<p>If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.\u00a0 I am looking forward to meeting you and sharing in this amazing journey with you!<\/p>\n<p>Sincerely,<\/p>\n<p>Sara Brzezinski<\/p>\n<p>Brzezinski.sara@spcollege.edu<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Hi!
