Then Clinical Medical Assistant is for you!<\/p>\n<p>The Allied Health Department of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.spcollege.edu\/friends-partners\/community-resources\/workforce-institute\">Workforce Institute<\/a> at St. Petersburg College is offering training for people interested in becoming nationally certified as a Clinical Medical Assistant (CMA).<\/p>\n<p>According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of medical assistants went from 23 percent growth in 2014 to 29 percent in 2016. Florida is one of the top five states for the highest level of employment. In the Tampa Bay area alone, more than 675 jobs were advertised in Aug 2018. That is a lot of opportunity!<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>In May 2017, the national employment estimate was 646,320; the annual mean wage $33,580. <\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>In May 2017, Florida employed 54,220 CMA\u2019s with an annual mean wage of $31,980.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>At the end of 2010, Pew Research Center reported that 10,000 baby boomers turn 65 each DAY, and about 10,000 more will cross that threshold every day for the next 19 years. The growth of this aging baby-boomer population will continue to increase demand for preventive medical services, which are often provided by physicians. As their practices expand, physicians will hire more assistants to perform routine administrative and clinical duties, allowing the physicians to see more patients. The number of positions that should be available in coming years should make this one of the most sought after roles beneath the nursing level.<\/p>\n<h5>What does a clinical medical assistant do?<\/h5>\n<p>A medical assistant is a multi-skilled allied health care professional that specializes in procedures commonly performed in the ambulatory health care setting. Medical assistants perform both clinical and administrative duties and assist a variety of providers, including physicians, nurse practitioners and physician assistants.<\/p>\n<p>They typically work in medical offices, clinics, urgent care centers and may work in general medicine or specialty practices.<\/p>\n<p>Common duties of a medical assistant include administrative and clinical tasks like:<br \/>\n\u2022 Checking patients in and out upon arrival and departure<br \/>\n\u2022 Answering phone calls and questions<br \/>\n\u2022 Assisting doctors with exams and procedures<br \/>\n\u2022 Administering injections or medications<br \/>\n\u2022 Working in the electronic health record (EHR)<br \/>\n\u2022 Performing EKG, phlebotomy, and laboratory procedures<br \/>\n\u2022 Taking patient vital signs<\/p>\n<h5>Training and Certification: Classes begin January 2019<\/h5>\n<p>At SPC\u2019s Workforce Institute, we offer a <a href=\"https:\/\/spcollege.augusoft.net\/index.cfm?method=ClassListing.ClassListingDisplay&amp;int_category_id=27&amp;int_sub_category_id=331&amp;int_catalog_id=\">Clinical Medical Assistant program<\/a> that takes less than five months to complete!
