Aside from \u201copening up\u201d the campus for all to meet with program representatives and other services, we also wanted to provide an opportunity for students to make <a href=\"https:\/\/mycoursessupport.spcollege.edu\/career-services-on-demand-webinars\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">connections between academia and the profession<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3358\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3358\" style=\"width: 620px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.spcollege.edu\/health-sciences-nursing-veterinary-technology-educational-information\/hec-open-house-health-opportunities\/health-education-center-open-house\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3358\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-3358 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.spcollege.edu\/health-sciences-nursing-veterinary-technology-educational-information\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2017\/04\/Health-Education-Center-Open-House.jpg\" alt=\"Health Education Center Open House\" width=\"620\" height=\"347\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.spcollege.edu\/health-sciences-nursing-veterinary-technology-educational-information\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2017\/04\/Health-Education-Center-Open-House.jpg 620w, https:\/\/blog.spcollege.edu\/health-sciences-nursing-veterinary-technology-educational-information\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2017\/04\/Health-Education-Center-Open-House-300x168.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3358\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Health Education Center Open House<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>I imagine at times that current students in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.spcollege.edu\/degrees-training\/health-sciences-and-veterinary-technology\/health-sciences\/health-sciences-as-degree\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Associate in Science \u2013 Health Sciences degree<\/a>, who are pursuing a health program, might grow weary and question why they have to take Composition I, for example, to be a Dental Hygienist. Or, maybe there are those prospective nurses who question their understanding or impressions of the role of a nurse. Program representatives were available to speak to their questions about their respective professions and what it takes to do the job.<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, because most health programs are competitive \u2013 meaning we receive more applications than the amount of seats available, this event provided an opportunity for students to learn about all the health programs St. Petersburg College offers.<\/p>\n<h5>Advice for students considering health care<\/h5>\n<p>The best advice to provide any student considering a career in health care is the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Ensure you really understand what that profession does each day, in real life, and not based on what your friend told you or television shows portray. Make sure you understand the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.spcollege.edu\/admissions\/health-programs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">essential functions<\/a> of the chosen career.<\/li>\n<li>Have a plan B! Consider another career in health.
