Cartwright gained skills beyond the textbook by learning from his professor&#8217;s knowledge of the field. Cartwright found the engineering technology program&#8217;s flexibility helped accommodate his challenging work and personal\u00a0schedule. St. Petersburg College&#8217;s Associate of Science Degree in Engineering Technology \u2013 also the first in Florida \u2013 has been adopted by 11 other colleges in the state and serves as a national model for other states. The program, developed by the Florida Advanced Technological Education (FLATE) National Science Foundation Center and SPC, was awarded the Florida College System Chancellor\u2019s Best Practice Award for Workforce Education in 2010.<\/p>\n<p>Students are immersed in a hands-on environment that gives them current industry knowledge as engineering technicians. They&#8217;re prepared to support processes by solving technical problems in research and development, sales, construction, assembly, quality assurance and prototyping.
