Through the support of a grant<\/a> from the National Science Foundation, ten students enrolled in the Biomedical Engineering Technology degree<\/a> from SPC<\/a> attended the annual Florida Biomedical Society Symposium held at Disney\u2019s Yacht Club Resort. This two day conference is a great opportunity for students to meet industry professionals, develop a mindset of continual education, and an opportunity to explore career opportunities. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

One student, Abel Gutierrez, decided to attend the conference in lieu of last semester\u2019s commencement ceremonies because he knew how beneficial building professional connections can be. \u201cThis is the third time I\u2019ve attended this conference and I have met so many people in the industry. In fact, I obtained my current position after meeting my supervisor at this conference two years ago, \u201d Gutierrez said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The format of the conference included several hands-on, in-depth training sessions led by manufacturers that provided students the opportunity to be trained on specific medical devices and receive an industry certification at the end of the training. Additionally, SPC<\/a> graduates who have been working in their field for two years are eligible to take the Certified Biomedical Technician (CBET) exam at the conference issued by the Credentials Institute of AAMI – the Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition to full-day manufacturer training, break-out sessions were also hosted by healthcare technology companies from the 85 exhibitors and included topics such as  Medical Equipment Cyber Security, the Centralization of Healthcare Technology Management and Resume<\/a> Writing and Interview Techniques for the medical equipment service industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr. Brian Bell, Lead Faculty for the BMET program located at the Tarpon Springs Campus<\/a> and Carlos Villafane, faculty and president of the Bay Area AAMI chapter presented scholarships to two St. Petersburg College<\/a> students, Deidre Harris and Christopher Fahmie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis was my first time attending and I was\noverly excited about the atmosphere and being awarded my first scholarship,\u201d\nsaid Harris. \u201cThere were many companies there hiring, with hiring managers\nright there to talk to you and help lead you in the right direction and offer\nadvice.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
