{"id":4668,"date":"2018-04-27T07:38:29","date_gmt":"2018-04-27T11:38:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.spcollege.edu\/education-information\/?p=4668"},"modified":"2024-02-12T08:33:36","modified_gmt":"2024-02-12T13:33:36","slug":"sensory-experience-in-diverse-populations-class","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.spcollege.edu\/education-information\/sensory-experience-in-diverse-populations-class\/","title":{"rendered":"Sensory Experience in Diverse Populations Class"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Students on the Seminole campus recently experienced a unique active learning situation in a Diverse Populations classroom setting of Dr. Jennifer Lechner.\u00a0 <span class=\"Y0NH2b CLPzrc g9yevd\">A sensory experience affects a human&#8217;s senses: sound, sight, touch, smell and taste.\u00a0 To help navigate different areas of the campus each visually impaired student was paired with another student for safety.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Students participated in a sensory deprivation activity by using earplugs for simulating a hearing impairment.\u00a0 The use of blindfolds simulated\u00a0 visually impaired.\u00a0 Students were exposed to the frustrations of someone who is hearing impaired and experienced how isolating this could be in conversations.\u00a0 Eating lunch forced students to do more hands onto prepare what they would eat.<\/p>\n<h6 style=\"text-align: center\"><em><strong>Sensory Experience Provides New Perspective<\/strong><\/em><\/h6>\n<p>After the exercise, they had a new appreciation for navigating a public bathroom, using an elevator, a computer and even eating food. One take-away the students discovered was that they could leave the classroom and escape the disability<em>; whereas, those who have a hearing or visual impairment never get a reprieve.<\/em><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4697\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4697\" style=\"width: 6016px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.spcollege.edu\/education-information\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2018\/04\/Multisensory1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-4697\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.spcollege.edu\/education-information\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2018\/04\/Multisensory1.jpg\" alt=\"Blindfolds simulate what students go through to eat lunch in Diverse Pops class\" width=\"6016\" height=\"4000\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.spcollege.edu\/education-information\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2018\/04\/Multisensory1.jpg 6016w, https:\/\/blog.spcollege.edu\/education-information\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2018\/04\/Multisensory1-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.spcollege.edu\/education-information\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2018\/04\/Multisensory1-768x511.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blog.spcollege.edu\/education-information\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2018\/04\/Multisensory1-1024x681.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 6016px) 100vw, 6016px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4697\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Blindfolds simulate what students go through to eat lunch in Diverse Populations class<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Student responses supported this as a valuable and exciting learning experience.
