Science Literacy Reading Fair @SPC<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Dr. Meg Delgato, COE Science professor<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

College of Education students currently enrolled in Dr. Meg Delgato’s Science Concepts in the Elementary Classroom (SCE 4113), hosted a reading fair supporting science literacy.\u00a0 The event was held on\u00a0 March 27, at the Clearwater Campus. The fair featured a selection of children\u2019s books with themes related to various aspects of science. The reading fair provided an opportunity for COE students to share their favorite science book through a storyboard display.<\/em><\/p>\n

Service Project<\/strong><\/em><\/h6>\n

The event was part of a service project to support science education. Students created\u00a0display<\/em> boards.\u00a0 The board was to depict their interpretation of the science theme of the\u00a0selected book.\u00a0 The project emphasized science vocabulary.\u00a0 Text-to-world<\/em> reading strategies were encouraged.\u00a0 Text-to-world reading strategies play a key role in helping teachers use <\/em>children\u2019<\/em>s literature to connect meaning to science content.\u00a0 Purposeful reading helps students to better <\/em>comprehend the ideas in the text.\u00a0 Students extensively researched their subject to support <\/em>each project board.\u00a0\u00a0 The students investigated scholarly articles with evidenced-based practices related to literacy.<\/em><\/p>\n

Children, spouses, parents and faculty attended.\u00a0 Each guest had the opportunity to leave with a coloring sheet, puzzle or other take-home item.\u00a0 Take-aways are intended as a memory tool to emphasize at least one science vocabulary word.\u00a0 The participants had the chance to\u00a0<\/em>learn many new science terms with 24 display boards and have a little fun at the same time! Science teaches kids about the world around them. Science can spark in kids’ minds that they, too, can help solve the world’s big problems.\u00a0 <\/span>We hope to make this event a regular \u201cbooking\u201d for our COE students!<\/em><\/p>\n
