The brain translates print into speech by rapid recognition of\u00a0letter combinations to sounds.\u00a0 The brain recognizes patterns.\u00a0 Phonics is used in teaching this skill.\u00a0 With phonics you look at the whole word, breaking down to beginning sounds, ending sounds and context clues.\u00a0 Or you can do the reverse by building from one letter to a word.\u00a0 Phonics is the code to cracking reading.<\/p>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>Readers Lacking Decoding Skills<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>Teachers&#8217; view:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>difficulty matching letters and their sounds<\/li>\n<li>guessing at words based on first few letters<\/li>\n<li>student doesn&#8217;t recognize patterns they have been taught in class<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Parents&#8217; view:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>child gets stuck often and parent ends up telling child words<\/li>\n<li>frustrated child not enjoying story as they spend so much time trying to figure out words<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>Decoding Reading Strategies<\/strong> \u2013 there are many for all ages:<\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li>Write or project it \u2013 visually so students \u201csee\u201d.\u00a0 Example would be air writing.<\/li>\n<li>Use phonemic awareness &#8211; repeat and speak it.<\/li>\n<li>Give time to think about an answer \u2013 think aloud.<\/li>\n<li>Sort words from a story \u2013 locate key words.<\/li>\n<li>Follow along \u2013 read along and stop to let child fill in what is next.<\/li>\n<li>Teach phonics.<\/li>\n<li>ABCs \u2013 students use a letter of the alphabet for the subject. Exposure to new words.<\/li>\n<li>Inference \u2013 activity where suitcase filled with objects.
