I had the privilege of interviewing a former student who graduated from the College of Education in May 2013 with an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.spcollege.edu\/degrees-training\/education\/exceptional-student-education\">Exceptional Student Education degree<\/a>.\u00a0 Now, in her fifth year of teaching, Nancy is currently a kindergarten teacher.\u00a0 \u00a0For the 2017-2018 school year, she was a nominee for Teacher of the Year.<\/strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3991 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.spcollege.edu\/education-information\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2017\/11\/Nancy-Davenport.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"573\" height=\"501\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.spcollege.edu\/education-information\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2017\/11\/Nancy-Davenport.png 573w, https:\/\/blog.spcollege.edu\/education-information\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2017\/11\/Nancy-Davenport-300x262.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 573px) 100vw, 573px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><strong>I asked her &#8220;Five Questions&#8221; about teaching:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong><em>What do you enjoy most about your current position?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>By far, I enjoy the relationships that I am making with the kids.\u00a0 I really try and connect with each student on a personal level to find what works.\u00a0 I have learned how to provide differentiated attention for students who need that from me.\u00a0 For instance, we have &#8220;lunch bunch&#8221; on Fridays where I can spend time with children informally.\u00a0 I have a student with behavioral issues, but I have learned what makes him laugh.\u00a0 I may hold a paper a little longer than necessary and then let him have it.\u00a0 These moments make teaching fun.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong><em>What have you learned in the COE that has helped most in your career?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I appreciate the value of class time and how every moment counts.\u00a0 It is amazing what I can teach in even two to five minutes!\u00a0 I have learned the value of teamwork and being part of a learning community.\u00a0 At my school, I cannot do it alone and just shut my door.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>What has been the biggest challenge?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It is difficult when you have students who move alot within the school year.\u00a0 There are different reasons for student mobility, and you can&#8217;t blame children for not coming to school.
