Even students who get drowsy at the mere mention of writing instruction will enjoy the upcoming writing workshop given by Dr. Roy Peter Clark<\/a>, who livens up his talks with some rocking piano pieces, fun pop culture references and some seriously charismatic energy.<\/p>\n

Clark\u2019s free workshop, offered by St. Petersburg College<\/a>, will be held at the college\u2019s Downtown Campus <\/a>on August 30, 2017, from 1- 2 p.m. in room DC-210. Faculty and staff who attend will receive one PDU credit.<\/p>\n

Clark is a writer and editor, and has been a teacher of writing to students of all ages since 1979. He recently retired from the Poynter Institute, where he started out as their first full-time faculty member, then retired as vice president and senior scholar. He has appeared on several radio and television talk shows, including The Oprah Winfrey Show, where she declared him her \u201cmedia expert.\u201d He is the author or editor of eighteen books, including Writing Tools, The Glamour of Grammar, How to Write Short and The Art of X-ray Reading.<\/p>\n

Event organizer Lauren Dykes, an Instructional Support Specialist at the Downtown Campus, knows Clark well, as he is her father. Dykes says that though her dad has retired, he is still working at what he loves: Teaching people how to write.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe has a lot more time on his hands, and he offered to come in and try to help people sharpen their writing skills,\u201d Dykes said.<\/p>\n

Students, of course are encouraged to attend, but tutors, faculty, staff and anyone interested in writing are also welcome and would benefit.<\/p>\n

\u201cStudents will benefit by being exposed to new approaches to writing,\u201d Dykes said, \u201cinstructors will enjoy observing Dr. Clark\u2019s approach to presenting the information and anyone could benefit from learning the skills needed to effectively communicate in today\u2019s society.\u201d<\/p>\n
