Kathleen Lane, Nursing<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

As a Community Nursing instructor, Kathleen Lane says that getting involved with the community actually helps her do her job better by offering her with first-hand knowledge of the community’s resources for the underserved population.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Instead of one big project, Lane has her hand\nin many. She meets with volunteer coordinators\nat several of the facilities in the community to get an idea of\nwhat they do and how our students can help them. For the past five\nyears, Lane has been a member of the Pinellas School Health\nAdvisory Committee, a multi-disciplinary committee who addresses\u202fany issues that\naffect\u202fthe health of all Pinellas County Schools students. She\nalso coordinates volunteer days with the St. Petersburg Health\nClinic that enable students and other\nSPC faculty members to give back to the community, as well. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lane also acquires and donates new or gently\nused items such as travel cribs, bouncers and car seats\u202ffor gifts at\na “baby shower” put on by Wellness Ministries of Tarpon Springs,\nwhich helps low-income women who are expecting\n– some\u202fof whom are homeless or live in poverty. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

With the help of a student life representative, Lane raises\nawareness and hones her students\u2019 community education skills by\ncoordinating a health fair where students\npresent on topics that promote good\nhealth practices and the prevention of illness.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lane says she truly hopes that her\nefforts help to make a positive difference in the health of\nthe community.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI don\u2019t see myself as an outstanding example of\ncommunity engagement,\u201d she said. \u201cI see myself as a nursing instructor who is\ntrying to provide my students with an experience that will add to their nursing\ncareer and also provide them with the satisfaction that they were\nable to\u202feducate the community\u202fpopulation to improve\u202ftheir\u202fhealth and\nwell-being.\u201d\u202f <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
