Alanna Olah, Hospitality and Tourism<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Alanna Olah, Instructor in Charge of SPC\u2019s Hospitality and Tourism Program, is not a veteran herself. But she has a strong belief that veterans are some of society\u2019s most important assets \u2013 and should be treated as such. That belief motivates her work with Vets2Success, an organization that trains struggling vets and their spouses for jobs in the hospitality and tourism industry. Her dedication to this cause has made her the Business community\u2019s designee for Outstanding Community Educator. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Olah works with Vets2Success to train\nveterans to be chefs, bakers, brewers, and to grow food. She\nteaches the veterans, work with them in the kitchen, and\nprovides operational support. She and other\nvolunteers then work with the veterans to find jobs with employers who care about supporting\nthem with living wages of at least $14 per hour. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

With hospitality and tourism being the number\none industry in Pinellas County, Olah believes that our community benefits from\nthis program: Employers need great workers, and veterans need great jobs. She\nsays SPC students also learn a lot through volunteering and\nfulfilling the service learning requirements that she builds into\nher courses.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Olah has 23 years of experience in the\nhospitality field, mainly in hotels, resorts and restaurants.\nShe started teaching courses in 2011, and earned a master\u2019s degree in\nHospitality and Tourism in 2012 from Rosen College of Hospitality\nManagement. She became a Clinical Assistant Professor at University of\nIllinois at Urbana-Champaign before relocating to teach at SPC in 2017.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Though honored to be recognized for community\nengagement, Olah says that she\u2019s not a hero \u2013 but the veterans of the\nUnited States Military certainly are.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMany of the veterans in our program\njust need someone to believe in them,\u201d she said. \u201cThey are incredible.
