{"id":9668,"date":"2020-08-26T11:00:00","date_gmt":"2020-08-26T15:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.spcollege.edu\/careers-internships\/?p=9668"},"modified":"2025-11-13T20:38:46","modified_gmt":"2025-11-14T01:38:46","slug":"diversity-and-inclusion-matters-in-the-workplace","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.spcollege.edu\/careers-internships\/diversity-and-inclusion-matters-in-the-workplace\/","title":{"rendered":"Diversity and Inclusion Matters in the Workplace"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Diversity and inclusion (D&amp;I) efforts in the workplace are being elevated more in light of recent events across the country surrounding continued racial injustice.\u00a0 Like many other job-seekers, you may be wondering how to find out if a company values diversity and inclusion and why that matters.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to a <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/how-to-tell-if-company-cares-about-diverse-employees-inclusion\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>recent article in Business Insider<\/strong><\/a>, Joe Gerstandt, a diversity and inclusion expert who has worked with numerous Fortune 500 companies, shared the following tips to determine if a company actually cares about D&amp;I:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Find out what the leadership team and board look like.\u00a0 Check out their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/home\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>LinkedIn<\/strong><\/a> profiles and the company\u2019s website and social media sites.\u00a0 Are women and people of color holding leadership roles? In their bios, do leaders openly discuss causes they support or personal testimonies such as living with a disability?<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Dig deeper than the surface and check out employee reviews such as on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.glassdoor.com\/index.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Glassdoor<\/strong><\/a>.\u00a0 Look if the company has made a list such as \u201cbest companies for diversity\u201d or \u201cbest places to work for LGBTQ+ employees.\u201d\u00a0<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Note how the job interviewer replies to your questions about diversity and inclusion, such as, \u201cWhat resources does the company provide to support LGBTQ employees?\u201d or \u201cHow does the company measure diversity and inclusion initiatives?\u201d<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Ask if you can talk to a current employee, such as someone in one of the company\u2019s employee resource groups (ERG) if they mention having them.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Why does any of this matter?\u00a0 Knowing that a company values diversity not only in gender and race but also in people\u2019s background and mindset, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/shelleyzalis\/2017\/11\/30\/the-truth-about-diversity-and-why-it-matters\/#57c1ce1c66e7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">helps build employees\u2019 morale and performance<\/a><\/strong>. \u00a0Not only does it feel good to have a sense of belonging and support in the workplace, but the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mckinsey.com\/business-functions\/organization\/our-insights\/why-diversity-matters\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">bottom-line is often improved<\/a> <\/strong>when a company focuses on building diverse teams, as noted in a study by McKinsey &amp; Company.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With many employers placing emphasis on D&amp;I efforts, they desire a candidate who will aid the initiative to create a supportive environment.\u00a0 As you prepare for your interview, here are some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/interview-questions-about-dei-applicants-should-know-job-interview-2020-8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>questions<\/strong><\/a> outlined in a Business Insider article that you may be asked around diversity, equity, and inclusion:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><em>Please share with us what diversity, equity, and inclusion mean to you and why they&#8217;re important.<\/em><\/li><li><em>In your opinion, what is the most challenging aspect of working in a diverse environment?<\/em><\/li><li><em>What is your approach to understanding the perspectives of colleagues from different backgrounds?<\/em><\/li><li><em>How would you handle a situation where a colleague was being culturally insensitive, sexist, racist, or homophobic?<\/em><\/li><li><em>How would you advocate for diversity, equity, and inclusion with colleagues who don&#8217;t understand its importance?<\/em><\/li><li><em>Tell me about a time when you advocated for diversity and inclusion in the workplace.<\/em><\/li><li><em>Can you give me an example of how you make your direct reports feel a sense of inclusion, belonging, and equity on a daily basis?<\/em><\/li><li><em>What steps will you take to eliminate bias from your hiring process?<\/em><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>To delve further into these topics, join industry experts and the SPC Career Services team for an important discussion Wednesday, September 30<sup>th<\/sup> from 11am \u2013 12pm via Zoom. \u00a0Cal Jackson, Director of Diversity and Inclusion Global Programs at Tech Data and Kimberly Jackson, Executive Director of the Institute of Strategic Policy &amp; Solutions at St. Petersburg College will lead the conversation, \u201c<strong>Diversity and Inclusion Matters in the Workplace.<\/strong>\u201d \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To participate in the online event, <strong><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/spcollege.zoom.us\/meeting\/register\/tJIsdeitqTguGNTQiiz79Rn7yoOpOnj5CmL6\" target=\"_blank\">please register via Zoom<\/a><\/strong>.
