{"id":7366,"date":"2017-06-30T23:35:48","date_gmt":"2017-06-30T23:35:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.spcollege.edu\/careers-internships\/?p=7366"},"modified":"2024-01-30T14:17:23","modified_gmt":"2024-01-30T19:17:23","slug":"internship-workshop","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.spcollege.edu\/careers-internships\/internship-workshop\/","title":{"rendered":"SPC Downtown welcomes 40 local businesses for internship workshop"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Dr. Kevin Gordon, provost of St. Petersburg College&#8217;s Downtown and Midtown centers, welcomed more than 40 local businesses to the Downtown Center\u00a0for an internship workshop in June.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInternships create economic development for our students,\u201d said Gordon.<\/p>\n<p>The St. Pete Chamber of Commerce Grow Smarter Workshop: Internship was sponsored by Duke Energy, Destination Better and Bite.<\/p>\n<p>The workshop focused on economic inclusiveness through internships and how to meet the needs of the workforce through partnerships with educational institutions.<\/p>\n<p>St. Pete Chamber of Commerce member and Vice Chair of Grow Smarter Ryan Griffin reminded the internship workshop attendees the importance of collaborating with local educational institutions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe number one driver for smart economic growth is through our educational systems, like SPC, Eckerd, and USFSP,\u201d said Griffin. \u201cWe cannot claim success until everyone is a part of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.spcollege.edu\/careers-internships\/internship-workshop\/internship-workshop-2\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-7368\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-7368\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.spcollege.edu\/careers-internships\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/22\/2017\/06\/Internship-Workshop-1-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Internship Workshop\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.spcollege.edu\/careers-internships\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/22\/2017\/06\/Internship-Workshop-1-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.spcollege.edu\/careers-internships\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/22\/2017\/06\/Internship-Workshop-1-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blog.spcollege.edu\/careers-internships\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/22\/2017\/06\/Internship-Workshop-1-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blog.spcollege.edu\/careers-internships\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/22\/2017\/06\/Internship-Workshop-1.jpg 1140w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>The mission for the workshop was to develop a sustainable program that creates a streamlined process and links local university and college students with intern positions at Chamber member businesses.<\/p>\n<p>The workshop was led by:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Jacob Wortock, SPC Workforce and Internship Coordinator<\/li>\n<li>Melena Postolowski, Eckerd College Director of Internships and Employer Relations<\/li>\n<li>Amanda Peters, University of South Florida St. Petersburg Employer Relations Coordinator<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Also at the workshop, a panel of business leaders gave personal insight on developing an internship program. The panel speakers included:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Tarah Harkins, Director of Campus Recruiting and Pipeline Development at Raymond James<\/li>\n<li>Alicia Branon, Recruitment Program Manager at Southwest Florida Water Management District<\/li>\n<li>Ryan McNulty, Talent Acquisition Partner\/Campus Relations at Tech Data<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5><strong>SPC Internship Program<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>The college connects students with businesses that can provide valuable work experiences that can prepare them for their chosen profession. Active learning opportunities like internships are critical to student success.<\/p>\n<p>SPC allows employers to post ads for internships as well as job opportunities so businesses can find the perfect employee or intern.
