\"Internship<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n

This summer I secured an internship with\u00a0the Sets and Lighting\u00a0Department at HSN. \u00a0I helped construct the sets used in\u00a0HSN\u00a0programs ranging\u00a0from\u00a0the initial\u00a0build\u00a0of elements\u00a0in the scenic shop to the\u00a0final\u00a0dress–when\u00a0the\u00a0props and\u00a0decoration\u00a0are\u00a0positioned –before\u00a0a program goes on the air.\u00a0I also\u00a0help\u00a0store and\u00a0deliver props and decorations from the\u00a0Scenic\u00a0Warehouse as well as touching-up\u00a0the sets\u00a0of\u00a0HSN live programs.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

My Biggest Aha! Moment\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

When I left the studio the previous day the set still needed paint and trim. \u00a0Also many other elements had\u00a0to be installed.\u00a0 I\u00a0had no\u00a0idea what\u00a0I was going to see\u00a0when\u00a0it was\u00a0finally\u00a0finished because\u00a0I didn’t know\u00a0how to read\u00a0the plot that determined the work.\u00a0 The next day when I saw the set from the comfort of my own home on my own television, I was WOWED when I saw this elaborate, colorful set that I\u00a0actually helped create from scratch.\u00a0 Sometimes it\u2019s good to just go with flow!<\/em><\/p>\n

The Work\"De<\/a><\/b><\/p>\n

This\u00a0work can\u00a0be difficult\u00a0and sometimes even dirty, but\u00a0none-the-less\u00a0I find\u00a0all of\u00a0these tasks\u00a0enlightening.\u00a0 Each day I learn about how\u00a0intricate\u00a0and diverse\u00a0HSN is as an industry.\u00a0 This is also\u00a0a very\u00a0educational\u00a0experience for me because as a result of this internship\u00a0I have more skills and talents to offer future\u00a0employers, to be completely\u00a0honest, there is nothing\u00a0like\u00a0seeing something\u00a0you helped\u00a0create.\u00a0 What was once\u00a0just\u00a0three\u00a0pieces\u00a0of wood becomes a set to be\u00a0broadcasted\u00a0GLOBALLY<\/em>!<\/p>\n

The Most Memorable Moment<\/b><\/p>\n

I\u2019ve had several tours of the\u00a0HSN campus.\u00a0\u00a0 Each tour leaves\u00a0my head spinning! \u00a0Aside from the bewilderment\u00a0of\u00a0traveling\u00a0around a campus of this size, the tours left an\u00a0impression on me.\u00a0I\u00a0saw\u00a0a totally different\u00a0part of retail\u00a0and\u00a0narrative\u00a0that I’ve never seen. This unified group of workers ranges from armies of models to nerdy gaffers; from marketing planners to camera operators; from scenic carpenters to executive housewives who supply merchandise to HSN, make-up the HSN commodity.<\/em><\/p>\n

I really want emphasize my use of the term commodity because on one particular day during my internship it became a meaningful word.\u00a0 \u00a0On that day a group of identical blonde models were escorted through a cold, dark studio and I was reprimanded by the broadcasting director for walking through the \u201cBefore and After\u201d\u00a0shooting.\u00a0 Following this moment I met a group of carpenters building a\u00a0gigantic white set, speaking in\u00a0a strange jargon, with their constant jokes and hardworking manner.\u00a0 In the middle of this work environment they allowed this 21 year old dorky cinefile spend the summer with them. I\u00a0realized on that day, at that moment that HSN is itself, a commodity. \u00a0HSN’s drive to make a product desirable through the medium of visual broadcasting provides a variety of many employment\u00a0opportunities as well as a unique\u00a0experience for their audience down to smallest detail. Most of the customers will not notice these small artistic details, even though they are fully succumbing to them subconsciously, but not me, after this semester, not me.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

The Future<\/b><\/p>\n

Sadly,\u00a0I will be\u00a0leaving HSN\u00a0(for the time being at least)\u00a0but\u00a0I will\u00a0cherish\u00a0these\u00a0past\u00a0two months\u00a0forever. After this internship\u00a0I plan on\u00a0having a brief\u00a0vacation\u00a0until\u00a0I\u00a0begin pursuing\u00a0my\u00a0Bachelors\u00a0at\u00a0the\u00a0University of Tampa\u00a0on\u00a0August\u00a025th.<\/em><\/p>\n
