{"id":1578,"date":"2021-02-03T15:08:15","date_gmt":"2021-02-03T20:08:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.spcollege.edu\/business-educational-information\/?p=1578"},"modified":"2023-06-23T12:41:30","modified_gmt":"2023-06-23T16:41:30","slug":"students-sweep-business-strategy-competition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.spcollege.edu\/business-educational-information\/students-sweep-business-strategy-competition\/","title":{"rendered":"Students Sweep Business Strategy Competition"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Each year, students in St. Petersburg College\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.spcollege.edu\/future-students\/degrees-training\/business\/business-administration\/business-administration-bs-degree\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Business Administration<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.spcollege.edu\/future-students\/degrees-training\/business\/management-and-organizational-leadership\/management-and-organizational-leadership-bas-degree\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Management and Organizational Leadership<\/a> bachelor\u2019s programs participate in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bsg-online.com\/\">The Business Strategy Game<\/a> as part of their MAN 4900 Strategic Capstone Project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This year, three out of four of our Fall 2020 business graduates who went to the international competition placed in the top three! As SPC College of Business Dean Marta Przyborowski stated, \u201cIt is wonderful to see our bachelor\u2019s graduates competing at this high level against major universities.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Simulating Business Operations<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>In this simulation, teams are tasked to operate an athletic footwear company, where they must assess market conditions, determine how to respond to the actions of competitors, forge a long-term direction and strategy for their company, forecast upcoming sales volumes, and make many other decisions critical to the success and operations of their company.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Those who win their class industry competition are invited to the Business-Strategy Invitational world competition. SPC\u2019s Fall 2020 capstone class had over 200 students, and four out of six of the top Capstone teams participated in the global competition. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our Fall capstone students who ended their 2020 year on this high note are:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>First Place<\/strong> \u2013 Thomas Walsh and Michelle Rutkowski Martin, with an overall score of 108 in Industry 1.&nbsp; They outcompeted nine other global college and university teams to win!<\/li><li><strong>Third Place<\/strong> \u2013 Stephen Padgett faced intense competition and had an overall score of 107 in Industry 2.<\/li><li><strong>Third Place<\/strong> \u2013 Karen Goode was also in a highly competitive industry and earned an overall score of 108 in Industry 3.<\/li><li><strong>Sixth Place<\/strong> \u2013 Nicole Mastrodonato had an overall score of 81 in Industry 4.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bsg-online.com\/home\/stats\/bsi\/competition\/2091\">See the scorecard here.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A History of Success<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. Robin Wilber said that almost all eligible students compete each year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSince 2010 over 85 percent of our class industry winners choose to compete after finishing this class and graduating from our program,\u201d she said. \u201cThese students make over 200 strategic decisions daily for two weeks in this international competition.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Professor Roni Murphy, the SPC College of Business has a strong history of doing well in this competition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe have had 73 SPC top teams going to the international competition and ranking in the top three,\u201d Murphy said. \u201cTo-date, 12 teams earned first place, 14 second place, and 11 third place.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The competition was stiff, with some students coming from master\u2019s programs. This international competition included Clemson, Florida State, Penn State and University of Florida, plus Universities from Canada, France, Mexico, India, China, United Kingdom, Korea, Singapore, Saudi Arabia, Italy, Spain, Switzerland, South Africa and dozens more.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Dr. Tom Philippe, many students participate every year. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe Business Strategy Game has been used by 46,906 students in 2,850 classes\/sections at 493 college\/university campus locations in 49 different countries.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. Wende Huehn-Brown said that the College of Business is very pleased with the success of SPC graduates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe are so proud of every student that goes to this competition, as this simulation is very challenging,\u201d she said. \u201cIt\u2019s also a very realistic portrayal of managing an international corporation.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Three out of
