On Oct. 2, 2016 Leepa-Rattner Museum of Art (LRMA)<\/a>will open its\u00a0newest exhibitions:\u00a0SPC\u00a0Visual Art Faculty Show 2016<\/em><\/a>, a special exhibition featuring the work of many of the college\u2019s visual arts educators, and Satirical Opera: The Beggar\u2019s Opera by Abraham Rattner and The Threepenny Opera by Jack Levine<\/em><\/a>, an exhibition featuring two portfolios by two accomplished printmakers.<\/p>\n

Open House<\/strong><\/h2>\n

LRMA wishes to extend an invitation to all St. Petersburg College<\/a> students, faculty and staff to attend our open house for these two\u00a0new art exhibitions\u00a0on\u00a0Sunday, Oct. 9, from 3\u20135 p.m.<\/strong> There will be free admission during these hours. Gallery talks by several faculty artists will occur from 3\u20134 p.m.<\/p>\n

About the Exhibitions<\/strong><\/h3>\n

SPC Visual Arts Faculty Exhibition 2016<\/strong><\/em>

With support from Florida Hospital North Pinellas<\/a> and City of Tarpon Springs<\/a>, Partners in Art; \u00a0additional support from Dr. David & Maria Edmonds and Dr. Jonathan Steele.<\/p>\n

This biennial exhibition celebrates St. Petersburg College\u2019s Visual Arts faculty members, who in addition to serving as educators, are practicing artists. The exhibition showcases the breadth of expertise and experience of St. Petersburg College\u2019s art faculty in an array of different styles and media including ceramics, painting, printmaking, photography, mixed media and digital media. Continuing a tradition that began at St. Petersburg College in the 1950s, these instructors prepare, shape and inspire the next generation of artists.<\/p>\n

This exhibition also allows the opportunity for prospective students to learn about art courses available at the College and the instructors who teach them. With a new curator on board at LRMA, this enables the museum to reconnect with its most immediate audience by engaging students directly through their professors, providing a bridge between traditional academia and contemporary art practice.<\/p>\n

Participating faculty in the 2016 exhibition include Linda Berghoff, Jonathan Barnes, Barton L. Gilmore, Kim Kirchman, Marjorie Greene, Kevin Grass, Elizabeth Indianos, Michele Levin, Barbara Grazul Hubbard, Stephen Shatz, and Michaela Oberlander.<\/p>\n

Satirical Opera: The Beggar\u2019s Opera by Abraham Rattner and The Threepenny Opera by Jack Levine<\/strong><\/em>

Featuring two portfolios by two accomplished printmakers, Abraham Rattner\u2019s The Beggar\u2019s Opera and Jack Levine\u2019s The Threepenny Opera finely illustrate two related tales of corruption and injustice separated by 200 years. The life of the social underdog resonates in Rattner\u2019s and Levine\u2019s work as the drama unfolds through each artist\u2019s interpretation and energetic drawing style, captured through lithography and soft ground etching techniques.<\/p>\n

The Beggar\u2019s Opera was the first ballad opera, written in 1728 by John Gay for the London Stage. The ballad opera is a musical play that includes elements of formal opera that employs satire to denounce politics, poverty and injustice.<\/p>\n

The Threepenny Opera is an adaptation of The Beggar\u2019s Opera and a reflection of the political climate in Germany between the World Wars, was written by Bertolt Brecht and composer Weill in 1928. One of the opera\u2019s compositions, The Ballad of Mack the Knife, has been recorded by a number of artists include Bobby Darin, whose version became a number-one hit in 1959.<\/p>\n

A Gallery Talk: “An Introduction to Satirical Opera”<\/em> <\/strong>will be held on Sunday, Oct. 30, 2016<\/strong> at 3 p.m.<\/strong> and is included with admission.
